Toyo owners constantley criticise landy oil leaks BUT !!!.

well, we've had three Patrols on the trot, an MQ, GQ and now a GU and not one of them has leaked oil (except when the dealer left the oil filter loose on the GQ,...twice)
GQ clocked 260,000 when we off-loaded it, and the GU has just tripped over 250,000km.
Absolutely nothing wrong with the GU TD42T engine either, absolutely bulletproof, just needs a decent exhaust system. Yes, it's very old school, much like the 4BD1 and just the way I like 'em. It'll be a crying shame when emissions finally kill the old stager in our market.
And just don't start me on relative diff and gearbox strength...;)

And at least Nissan addressed the chassis cracking problem with the GU Telstra vehicles, unlike Land Rover with the 130......

People believe that there choice of vehicle is the best and never cause problems.There's no such thing.Rovers, tojo's, Nissan's all give trouble,the yellow pagers is full of mechanics to prove that.

Reminds me of the toyota driver i meet at Bloomfield junction (up the cape) He was stuck there for a week because of a broken rad. Had to get the rad shipped to weiper and then brought to him from there.
The corrigations just nackered his And it was a brand new toyota Well newish, gery nomads that had bought a truck and thrown a chequer book at it

He then said i was mad to be coming up to the cape in a defender.And those should not be taken out side a 20ks radius of a dealership I pointed out that this was the last leg of our 38,000k trip around Aus and the car had been fine all the way.

It was then i pointed out to him that i was not the one stuck for a week in the middle of no where in a car 10 years younger than mine .:)

mmm he did not talk to me after that :)

You just have to look at how many Deafeners are running around where Big Jon is to see how they perform in remote areas, hell, mine came from up there and had a really hard life for the first 75,000km thanks to the BFC but its never stuck me up (touch wood) but there are so many niggly little things like oil leaks, rattles and squeaks that would drive a person more used to Japanese fit and finish up the wall.

There are also way too many lemons produced compared to numbers produced for their own good, and Land Rovers ability to 'soften' the build toughness or not address known problem areas over the years (narrow bearing wheel hubs, greased wheel hubs, CV's, soft diffs, softish g/boxes, 130 chassis cracks, etc) is deplorable.

I have owned all 3, Pootrol MQ was crap and I would never have one again, but the GQ (depending on build date and engine trans package) was a much better truck but thats what they are, a truck.

My 80 series was great for the 6 weeks we had it until some idiot in a 1 tonner wrote it off, but it was not void from leaks, the steering box leaked like a seive but I was in the process of getting a replacement when the accident happened.

I loved the 80series and I would deffinatly have another if I could find 1 in as good nick again and I needed the room.

But the Landie isnt just a car, it feels like part of the family, the kids love it and us grown ups argue about whos driving when we go anywhere even though it is just as comfy in the passenger seat.

I agree that all cars have their problems, some more than others but you generally find that the people who own Landies and use them become more enthusiests rather than just an owner.

You cant say this about most Tojo or Missan owners, they tend to either be Mums taxi or hoons with a couple of float/caravan towers in between along with the odd tradie.

There are very few Jap crap owners that would fit into the enthusiest group.

My Mum has a prado and it cant even go through a ditch (that the subi brumby can drive through no probs) without busting a radiator from the flex and people drive these thing to the cape and drag vans accross OZ in them without too much problems but it just shows how vulnerable you are to be stranded in any car is in the right situation.

Give me a few oil leaks to fix any day on my S1 Disco rather than the multiples of problems that you can have with little warning with the Jap brands.

It's good they love their Jap thingys, even if they're not really cracked up to be everything the golden microphone recommends.:twisted:

For us Landy owners, one should ask, what 4wd would you be seen in, if Land Rover didn't exist?

I have had 3 Tojo's and all have given no end of trouble, enough to make a man move to Land Rover's.:D

The last Tojo was a 2.4 Fall-over, Exxon Valdez was the nick name, it leaked both internally and externally........ Engine leaked inside via the oil cooler and after 3 sump gaskets I gave up on the outside, gearbox into transfer case (had a hose from the filler plugs to drain it back),

Both my 85 rangie (now sold) and 97 tdi don't leak.

I just nod my head now and think I don't want these people to enjoy the Land Rover experience:D
