The UK LR Defender site now boasts a "wider ratio" gear box for the new model,,
we know its got a lower first,,
I'm assuming 6th will be taller than todays 5 speed.
so did they just add one and move the other? (think ratios)
and a Q for the more technically trained,,
the engineering and philospical(RON!!!) differences between a
"close ratio 6 speed"
and a
"wide ratio 6 speed" gear box.

I noticed this too.
I think the taller gearing just comes from using the D2 transfer gears.
Which means the 6 speeds could be relatively close - great for keeping the turbo on the boil, no big gaps in between.

If they added one at each end of a 5 speed box you would end up with 7 speeds, not 6!![]()
Generally speaking, a close ratio box will have a taller set of lower ratios, with the upper end being the same. A spread ratio box will have a lower set of low ratios, with the upper end the same. I believe that was the case with the toploader 4 speed gearboxes fitted to V8 Falcons years ago.
Their term "Wider Ratio" might just be alluding to the fact that the new 1st and 6th gears are further apart than the outgoing 1st and 5th gears.
apparently it's an all new Getrag 'box, (out of the Transit, GFT= Getrag Ford Transmision) and yes, it has a significantly lower first at 5.4:1
To me, the terms close and wide ratio have always referred to the spread of gears. eg. close ratio 'box = small RPM difference between gear changes, wide ratio significantly greater RPM difference.
The new GFT MT 82 six-speed gearbox provides a much wider ratio spread than before; the lower first gear offers a reduction in crawl speed and combines with the engine’s increased torque output to make towing on-road and off-road even easier. The increased engine torque also helps in-gear acceleration, and has allowed the new sixth gear to be set 20 per cent higher than the outgoing model’s top gear. This helps to improve real-world cruising refinement and fuel economy. Ground gears in both the gearbox and new transfer box help boost refinement, while reductions in clutch and gear-change loads make day-to-day living with Defender significantly easier.
and Max is right, they are now using the Disco high range gearset.
