defender diff housing to a series 3

Is it practical to put a defender front diff housing into a series 3 ?
If so, this would put disc brakes onto the series vehicle rather than the disc brake conversion kits that I have seen advertised.
I suppose there is a problem with mounting the housing to the leaf springs.
Does there need to be a change of brake booster

    Thanks
    Anthony

yes you'll need a brake booster to drive the discs.
yep your going to need to get the housing modded to take spring leafs
and Yep you'll need to add a brake proportioning valve or every time you breath on the brake pedal your going to lock the rears...

Ive seen the end result of it being done and its well worth the effort If you can get you series going fast enough to need that much braking ability

YES - the track is 6" wider on a coiller - so you would have to do the rear as well.

Also - the track rod and the leaf springs want to be in the same place - so you either need to get one of the new (2002? on) RHS swivel housings that have 2 arms, and move the track rod to the front (you have non-ackerman steering geometry then, but no big deal - and you need to install a combined track rod and drag link like on many toyotas) - OR - you need to make the spring perches on the axle higher than they should be - which is not ideal.

Track difference is actually 17.6cm, somewhat over six inches, according to the books, although the actual difference will depend on the tyres and wheels (unless the same). This will normally require eyebrows like the 90/110/Defender to be legal, and at least for appearance you would want to fit the rear axle as well (a lot easier).Note that the 90/110/Defender diffs are 3.54 where the Series 3 is 4.7 (except the Series 3 Stage 1 is 3.54 and the 110 6x6 is 4.7), and you want to have the same ratios front and rear.

My take on your proposal is that it is possible, it has been done, but there are a lot of problems, and it if your only reason is to get disc brakes it would be cheaper and easier to fit these to the original axle, even though this will be expensive.
