Do you use the Penrite in the Tcase or R380?
I had been using Castrol VMX80 in my old disco R380 and castrol 80W90 in the tcase and diffs. The disco got me to 360,000km and have done nothing to either box... bit of clunking but probably spline wear.
Anyway, I was going to use up the last of the VMX80 I have then swap to another recommended R380 lube?????

The gear in my 98 defender has holes in the boss,is that the fix for this problem by allowing more oil to get to it? Pat
you got it in one......
From what I have gathered the fix was to cross drill the input gear and extend the splines. If this has been fitted from new then the splines will have been lubricated and you should have minimal wear.
Non drilled inputs effectively had no lubrication... metal on metal fretting away. When I removed the input it still had the gunked on "grease" applied when built 12 years ago... and dry splines.

Mine was shocking when I removed it, and I know I'll have to do the shaft and yet another gear sometime down the line, but now is not the time to chuck $2K at the car.
I doubt you'll have any issues for a while, but the next thing will be all of a sudden you'll have no drive at all because the spline on the shaft is GONE. It will just shear off. The funky bit is you'll never know when it's going to happen until you're an "expert" - eg you're pushing the Fender.

I tapped in sum stainless wire about 2.5mm in dia into the spline in different spots till it was tight and that restored the drive good enough to get me home to repair it proper :D:D:D:D:D

I had wondered what I would do if it sheared out bush. Putting some wedges in is a great idea, then just take it easy. I sort of figured that bush battery welding it would not be strong enough.
Ever fixed a leaky (read not holding fluid at all) ZF auto tranny sump gasket on a slight slope, dirt road, on a standard height disco... we used the outer casing from the 7 core trailer wire to space the sump and lots of goo. It held oil and we contined on - until the A clutch packed it and we were left with reverese but we still got it moving the firts time!!!
