Can't help but I do looove the rock crawlers in mine
Well it seem ive found the first serious problem with the "new" 1995 130.
Doing an oil change this arvo, decided that a little knowledge is a good thing so pulled the tcase PTO cover. I knew what was coming when i saw the gunge around the shaft. (how easy is it to pull a fender vs a disco!!) Anyway sure enough we have some wear apparent. At a guess I would say a full 50%of the shaft splines, and 50% of the input gear splines are gone.
So the question is, Ive heard you can get inputs with longer splines, this would give some strength as it would sit on the untouched innermost section of the mainshaft... I guess if I can find a long spline, cross drilled input and I add the oil slinger jobbie, will I be able to take the fender up north next thursday???? The fishing camp is about 2-3 hours of low range (each way), no hill climbs just slow, winding, sometimes muddy track. Towing a 15 foot tinnie of course
Ill take it easy of course, but is it too risky???
Long term fix I will get the old disco R380 overhauled to speed up the process then just do a swapsie...
Two more questions:
Where do I get a long spline, cross drilled input and an oil slinger for E suffix inside of a week to Cairns?
And, besides the input is there anything else worth re-doing in a well working LT230 while its on the bench? It shifts really nice, centre diff locks and unlocks easy and Im happy with the gearing?
Thanks for putting up with the long post
Regards
Steve
Can't help but I do looove the rock crawlers in mine
I put a long spline input gear in mine a couple of months ago, this has removed about 90% of the drivetrain backlash and has made it bloody lovely to drive. since then I have done plenty of off road work and towed my 16 foot caravan with no problems at all. so far I cant see any reason to do anymore to it, will see in a few years time as to long term reliability, but so far 4-5000 km it's all good.![]()

JC,
thanksforthe heads up... will talkwith arover gbox guru tomorrow and go from there.
Also Jimbo, how worn was your main shaft and where did you get the long spline from if I may??? thanks
Steve
Old gear vs new gear. new gear is FTC5089 from your local independant landrover supplier, mine was under $200

Thanks Jim,
seems yours is at a guess 20-30% worn, mine would be just under 50% but with slightly less ramp.
I have ordered a FTC5089 just this morn, $230 to Cairns polus new bearings, another $60 odd (prob could have got these cheaper from a bearing supplier but I like my local rover guy)... I will put it on and see how things go.
It took me 15 minutes to pull the gear off, so I will just make it a check item each oil change (maybe each second oil change) and see how things go.
Prolonging a rebuild will be good.
My thoughts are if it wore out 2/3 of the splines with no lube in 170,000km I should get a fair run out of it on the front third with lube?
Ill take some piccies and post if people want?
Steve
mine had less than half that left and was still going fine apart from the slop in the drive chain.
although my gearbox was really smooth to use most of the bearings and syncros were past it as well.
i got the box rebulit and a new transfer gear and bearings put in and you wouldnt know it was the same machine....

My thoughts exactly. If I have to rebuild it in 5-10 years time the $200 was worth it. I use Penrite extra lite semi-synthetic gear oil and it keeps getting better and better at shifting, lighter all the time. When I had my LT85 Santana box rebuilt the guy told me to do slow deliberate changes and pause momentarily at neutral on each up shift, and always shift with your finger tips. you will be amazed how light the shifts are and how long your gearbox will last!
