Just dragging up a post, got back from north of Cooktown. Mates boat was even heavier than I figured... but we had no real dramas. Driveline clunks almost all gone with new input gear. Track was reasonable but some late rain made it a little slippery for the run home.
The 130 is a mean trip machine - dont know why I used the disco for so long???

Only real prob was some slight engine temp increase, never to the red but was getting up there especially up hills. Pulled the air con condensor (using the air con as a pump anyway) this helped. Havent the time to sort it just yet but will replace water pump and thermostat (disco ones are near new and the pump/block gasjet needs doing) and then maybe rod the radiator...

    anyways
thanks for ideas. will drive on the new gear flogged mainshaft for a whiles

    regards
    Steve

Update to "jimbo's budget fix" for the mainshaft gear.
So far have done just over 10,000km, so took the gear out to check for wear etc.

First took off the cover, everything nice and oily, the oil drillings in the gear work well

Next removed the gear and checked for wear, all well covered in oil and no sign at all of wear or even marks from where the splines contact each other (looks much better in the flesh than the pix show)

The truck has been used for touring, heaps of off roading and towing our 1.5 ton caravan and trailers and so far so good. $200 well spent I think. If it holds out till the box wears out (hopefully well into the future) I will be very happy!

That reminds me - I should pull mine out and see what's what. I recently changed the transfer case oil and it came out looking good. I thought with a new gear meshing with the old stuff there might have been some wear issues but the oil didn't say so.

I have noticed that there's more of a transfer whine now, but nothing worth stressing about. Fred Smith did warn me about the possibility.

FWIW, my input shaft and gear looks exactly like Jimbo's when I pulled it three weeks ago after 220,000km.

Looks like the cross drilled gear works fine.

cool you guys already have this all sorted.

so as i see it its the Dog that you guys are replacing, leaving the shaft ( damaged ) in place, it that correct.

and that this is accesed though the back of the T case ( where a 2D would have its drive shaft)

so its pop of the cover, and pull out?? where is the outer race for the big AC bearing? in the cover?

    cheers

    Clean32...
yeah replacing a worn input gear assembly with a new cross dilled input gear. the replacement gear engages on the entire main shaft spline rather than the outer 2/3.
This somewhat bodgy method of only replacing one of the worn components seems to be a quick get around of gear train slop.

The input gear is accessed by removing what is known as the PTO cover, it is the round cover plate at the very top of the transfer case, much easier to get to in a fender than a disco. rattle the plat off and the rest is self explanatory, the bearing has a race effectively in the cover, and the gear can be pulled from the mainshaft pretty easily.

Mine's done lots of heavy work too without any problems, still minimal backlash and great to drive without the clunks
