Great thread.
Bringing it to life if I may to ask a question.
How do you guys removing the bearings from the input gear,I presume not with the LR special tool?
The input gear drives the middle of the three gears on the intermediate cluster. A point about replacing the input gear on a 1.003 case: High range, the rear gear on the cluster in boxes with this ratio is larger than the middle gear. Therefore the input gear cannot be pulled straight out rearwards as with other boxes. Not sure whether the solution is to first remove the transfer box from the gearbox or remove the shaft from the cluster gear and drop it out.
The bad old LT230 input gear.
If we had some legal clout we could have got LR for a latent defect on that poor piece of design. One could say the designers were negligent with regard the lubrication of that gear and shaft spline set.
