Disco and rangie have different ratio gears to Defender.
Discos and rangie have to have the intermediate gears rotated so space between teeth in the rear intermediate gear are aligned so the input gear can be withdrawn.
The race for the rear bearing is not actually in the cover but there is a spacer looking thing between the cover and the case. This spacer was siliconed onto my case and was a real bugger to get off. I gave up on two occasions and just put the cover back on it was so solid.
Not all input gears are the same. I don't know how to tell them apart. Tooth counts I guess.
Mine is not a cross drilled gear but has a factory oil feeder plate behind the cover. No wear at all to my shaft or gear. This must have been the fix they used before the cross drilled gear. You can get aftermarket oil feeder plates too.

While we are on this topic, has anyone replaced the input gear on a 1.003:1 t-case? (Some rangies and 110s with 4BD1/LT230).
Mal Story told me years ago that there are 2 different input gears for this ratio (and I assume whold gear sets).
Is a cross-drilled gear available - and anyone have a PN?
There have been a number of changes to the gears in LT230's, besides ratio changes (tooth count). Helix angles, pressure angle, smaller more numerous teeth.
Cross drilled input gears are not available for early models. As Rick said, the early ones can be modified by a tool maker to add the lubrication holes. Normal high-speed steel drill bits are not suitable for the hardened gears.
i think a spark eroder, will create an afected zone, in short a week area much larger than the actual hole.
possably a carob drill, how thick is the wall section that needs to be drilled??
?? not if you sharpen it correctly, and have plenty of coolant, keep backing it off every 10-15 seconds etc. Most dogs are case hardened and then only down to .2-.4mm once though that it gets better, until you get to the other side.
I’ll have a look when I get my one out.
Carob powder and carob chips are used as an ingredient in cakes and cookies. Carob is sometimes used as a substitute for chocolate. However, there is a significant difference in flavour. Carob is better suited to accompany fruit cooking (e.g. Apple and Carob cake) as it is milder and isn't as bitter as chocolate. The seeds, also known as locust beans, are used as animal feed. They are also the source of locust bean gum, a thickening agent. In Egypt, carobs are consumed as a snack. Crushed pods are used to make a refreshing drink. Compotes and liqueurs are made from carob in Portugal, Spain and Sicily. Carob has proven effective in relieving diarrhea in infants.[4]
