    Defender wheels and tyres (again)

I was in Rovacraft today picking up my new intercooler, and I spotted what I'd been after for ages - an almost perfect copy of the Defender alloy wheel, and at a very sensible price for 5 with the Landrover centre caps added.

So...now, tyres. Been talking to a couple of tyre shops, and had almost decided on the standard 235/85R16's, when the last place pointed out these were going to be thinner than the (Wrong) 31x10.5R15's that the previous owner had put on, but with proper height/rolling diameter and to have the same width, I could use 265/75R16's instead...so now I'm unsure again. What are others running?

Looking so far at Cooper STT's (The car isn't my daily transport, and I've been told these are the best on-road of all the off-road tyres, but I'm certainly open to other suggestions) and these seem to be around $300 for the smaller size and $335ish for the larger size - is this about right, or am I shopping at the wrong place?

I run 285/75/16 BFG muds which are just over 33", very happy with them. My old V8 110 ran 33/12.50/15s and could pump it's way out of virtually anything, spraying mud 20-30 feet in the air, while making the most melodious sound in the world, watching videos of it can still bring a tear to the eye

    I run 285/75/16 maxxis all-terrain-type tyres...
... fairly cheap from what I remember

I use these for daily driving - approx 200k's per day on sydney roads

Jimbo... what width rims have you got?
... mine are 7 inch (std defender alloys) and at first the 285/75/16's seemed a bit too wide

fwiw, on the 3.9 County I have 265 75 16 BFG MTs tubeless on steel disco rims and find them generally good & long wearing, and they don't seem to adversly affect the turning circle

Not wishing to provoke any undue harshness here ... but as my dear old Dad once told me. Son ... never worry about the width ... it's the length that counts

Fats may look the goods, but they'll not always do the job.
235/85 with good side wall plies for me.

    Cheers

I would have to agree - for almost all offroad use the only factors that matter are overall diameter, tread and tyre pressure. Width is generally irrelevant except in that it improves stability by having a wider effective track, but this is at the expense of increased load on all steering and suspension components. On road, the increased track width may improve stability but at the expense of a greater likelihood of being thrown off line by bumps hitting the outside edge of the tread well away from the swivel axis intersection with the road. There are rare occasions where the increased tyre width avoids the tyre dropping into ruts made by narrower tyres.

I have to agre with Rosco its the length of the tread on the dirt not the width that gets ya through especially when ya air down mate

Ah, you'll have to pop up and show them off then! We'll do the computer stuff at the same time.

What are their road manners like?
