    Buying a D2 MY2003

Have got the finances approved for getting a newer Disco (and will be keeping the old one still). I'm chasing a diesel MY2003 model with auto trans, but trying to get the base model, anything above that will be cream.

Was wondering what issues these models have had that people have heard about or experienced. I have heard of a problem with the auto in them going in to limp home mode for no apparent reason???

I would appreciate any help in to what to look for particularly or questions to ask.

    Matt.

    Matt.

Do search on TD5 on this site. There are a few issues but I guess that is what Land Rovers are all about. Oil in the injector harness comes up regularly but I have not yet had this trouble and my TD has 120,000km on it.

The oil pump bolt issue is usually associated with earlier engines.

I have travelled 40,000km in mine including a trip over the Gibb River Road to Broome with no major problems. The Land Rover Discovery relies on a lot of electrics but so do many other makes.

The V8 brigade will rubbish the TD5 but we get good ecomomy and don't have 8 leads and spark plugs to worry about . We also get cheaper rego .

    Hope this helps,

    Barry

I have exactly what you are looking at. Bought it new in early 2003. So far there have been a couple of recalls (see www.recalls.gov.au) one was ABS unit and the other was the fuel line but mine only need checking out in bth instances.

I did get the bump stops changed just after I got it, LR issue a tech bulletin for this and it means it has a very decent turning circle.

I've also had the ECU reflashed by TRS and replaced the suspension with OME

As for faults... oil leak on coupling of hose (thread tape and tightened), glow plug light on dash times out after a long while (think the relay's stuffed but haven't checked it properly), battery died after 4 years and the BCU immobilised the car for no apparent reason all I know is when I cleared the BCU fault codes it was OK

A word of caution on what I say though. My Disco has only done 36,000km (about 1/3 of which is bush tracks and sand)

I don't think we do Barry, each to their own.

Dont know what they would have to rubbish though. A intercooled and chipped Td5 will generate more power and torque than the V8 anyday...and do it with better fuel economy...

Thanks for that guys. I did try searching for threads but didn't have much luck. Thanks for that link.

I noticed that the majority of people from the "TD5 problems" thread own either a defender or pre 2003 disco. One of the main reasons I'm looking at getting the update model is that I was hoping all (or at least most) of the bugs have been ironed out.

Do people know if these common occurring problems have been occurring in the update model?

Any help will be much appreciated?

I have not heard too much on the newer models having problems but that could be their lower k's.

At least you should have the centre diff lock lever on the 2003. My 2001 has the mechanism on the transfer case but no lever to operate it. The 2002 model apparently had the mechanism removed from the case.

I think the 2003 should be OK as long as it has been looked after. I think people forget that the TD5 is a 2.5 litre and some drive them like a 4.2 litre truck.
