    Remove LT95 from County

    Gday all

    After some advice here, I have to do this as my front gearbox seal is leaking a lot into the bellhousing (I know its gearbox oil as its very clean and rear main engine seal and clutch were all replaced when I put the isuzu in, really wish I had done seal at that time). I have a full gasket and seal kit for the gearbox and plan to take it out and replace all/most of the seals and gaskets. Do I need an engine hoist? keeping in mind I will be flying solo and need to do this as cheap as possible. Can I make a plate to bolt on to the bottom of the box then remove on a trolley jack or will it be too unstable? Will it fit under the chassis rails, can I drop it to the floor and then take it out one side or do I have to remove floor and hoist out either front door? I am fairly limited with space in the garage under the house, not sure if I could maneuver a hoist around next to the car. Is it worth hiring a hoist for the bother it would save me? Any other tips? If front gearbox seal is leaking could it be stuffed oil pump or something else? Anyone had this leak before? I would be grateful for any words of wisdom.

    On another topic how much is too much play in drive shaft splines? If I hold the join laying under the car I can move it vertically probably a mm, but no play if twist each half of shaft in opposite directions. Front and rear appear to have about the same amount of play.

    Hoist

    I thought there was a place in Brissy somewhere, where you can book time on a vehicle hoist???. Someone talked about this recently. I have done the engine hoist through the door trick before , but as you mentioned you need some room around the vehicle.

    Pull the engine, if you can con a friend even better. The Isuzu only takes around an hour to remove with a friend (quicker if you know what your doing). The gearbox will take you all day to remove, bastard job.

    Then you can just sit in the engine bay and work on the G/box.

    That's how I've always done it anyway.

    You will need to remove the 2 floor plates & the transmission tunnel. Remove the cross member under the gearbox, it should be the removable type.
    The gearbox & transfer case are a one piece cast so it is extremely heavy. It would be difficult / dangerous to use a trolley jack alone. May be ok with a transmission jack. I use a engine crane poked through the door.

    Thanks for the fast replies I guess if I have to get an engine hoist/crane then it may be simpler to pull the engine instead was really hoping to avoid buying or hiring an engine crane. Larns engine removal will take me bit longer than you, I reckon that will take me a few hours just to remove bullbar, pto winch and radiator panel etc before I even get to the engine. Whats the cheapest engine crane I can get in Brissy, probably cheaper to buy than hire for a few days?

    Just bought one from super cheap on special for 200. Its a folding one and put it together this morning and seems it should be pretty good. Has a 1250 kg capacity. Got it because I will be doing an engine swap on my 81 rangie and will use it to keep the transmision steady from the top while rolling it back on the trolley jack then do the engine swap. If you miss these at super cheap, Trade Tools have them for around 260. Much better than paying 50 bucks a day for a hire one and having to rush around getting it done so you can return it. Probably sell it secondhand when the jobs done for 150.

    Isn't another common cause of oil leakage from the front of the LT95 the gasket on the oil pump ? I thought I read somewhere of somone cutting an access hole into the bottom of the bellhousing and diagnosing it was the pump only and replacing the seal in situ ? Or was I just dreaming ?

    I bought the one from supercheap to tift the Td5 out of my Extreme. It could just lift High enough to get the engine over the grill & bullbar. So it should lift the Isuzu high enough. if not you can always take the front wheels off.

    you bring it to raaf base amberly with a car trailer in tow (preferably one from ipswich) on a friday.

    we pull the tx in about 2 hours put it all on the trailer tow it to your place and I return the trailer...

    when you get the gear box fixed we do it all in reverse and you buy me a carton.

    2 if you want me to fix the box on the fly...

    If you want to DIY get a trolly jack and make an adaptor plate and you can drop it out the bottom, replace the front seal then jack it straight back up again...

    remeber to brace the engine in place. and removing the radiator shroud is a good thing too..

    I bought one of those Supercheap engine cranes a month ago for $200 - so far its worked a treat and seems to be reasonably well made! So much easier than using a block and tackle for engine removal. I am a little dubious about the claimed capacity of 500kg at full boom extension however......... In any case, 500kg is a very heavy engine.

    I agree with earlier posts, I would pull the engine unless you are well practiced in the removal of LR transmissions.
