Thread: wheel carrier

It´s been a long time since I was here, but you are so far away .
Been to North Africa with a friend to compete in an offroad marathon-rally. It´s been a lot of fun but also stress and taking into account that we drove a Tojota we did not so bad.
Down there we met some guys from Italy with their Defenders. One had a swing away spare wheel carrier on his rear door that he found very reliable and strong, even when surfing the dunes. He told me that it was produced by an Australian company but didn´t know the name of them. So could one of you please send me links of companies in OZ that produce or sell such things.
My Defender is now 4 years old and some weeks ago when I wanted to open the rear door all three pins of the hinges broke and the door and the spare wheel fitted to it (on the original bracket) just fell on me . I was lucky that my son, who is 2 years old, stood beside the truck and was unharmed.

For really hard abuse I haven't seen anything take stick and not either break or distort the tub in some way. Anything that secures to the rear door will bust sooner or later.....the hinges are simply rubbish.
We have alot of the washborad tracks which will destroy almost anything that you buy off of the shelf these days.
I ended up having one made to my design. The top tub bracket is tied into the roll cage from the inside and the bottom is secured to the chassis cross member.
It weighs quite abit with a 16" Wolf Rim, BFG AT, two 25lt jerries and a hi-lift etc...but after four years this thing is solid as a rock.
