    Diff pegging in NSW

    As per:

    www.ashcrofttransmissions.co.uk/part_47.html

Looking to get it done and couldn't be shagged doing it myself. Anyone recommend a diff repair shop in NSW capable of doing this properly?

Kraft Differentials at Parramatta are big in Super Modifieds, and many years ago fitted my Detroit Locker well.
So they should know what you are talking about.

I know a number of guys on UK forums that have done the job at home with a drill and a set of taps.
They used a phosphrus bronze or brass tip braized to the bolts. The job itself is not difficult to do....it's knowing the exact place to locate the two bolts.
I would think that anywhere against the crown wheel/ring gear would be ok..possibly opposite the pinion?

One of our racer mates did it on hid P38 Diffs in his Desert Warrier raid car. The time consuming bit is taking the axle out and stripping it down prior to doing the engineering.
I don't think it would be wise doing this mod with the diffs still in place.

    Regards.

I took a look at the Ashcoft site, but I don't quite get what diff-pegging is about. I can see that it stops flexing, but I can't see how the 2 bolts hold things to stop this. Anyone got a better explanation or photo than the ashcroft site?
    Thanks
    David

My understanding is that the crown wheel tries to ride up the pinion teeth when big power is applied in high traction.
Ie It tries to move away from the pinion.
The bolts/plate just stop it moving away. Ones I have seen have 2 bolts holding a metal pad which becomes a rubbing surface for the back of the crown wheel when it tries to move .
Simple idea, but seems to me to be only half the problem. What about the pinion moving. Many diffs have a bearing on the end to stop the pinion moving.

I decided to email Dave from Ashcroft.

He mentioned that pegging is a good idea for comp vehicles, but to do it to a pretty stock vehicle will be overkill. I have Ashcrofts 4.11 gears, so I thought I'd go back to the source to see what he reckoned about their overall strength.

    So I don't reckon I'll bother now.........
