Winch at ALDI - $599

Most people probably fall into that category but if it only gets used on the rare occasion, why not go for a handwinch?

• Will outlast any elec. winch,
• Half the cost
• No motors to burn out
• Easy to maintain
• No need for 300m of heavy duty wiring to reach the battery box in a fender
• No need for dual batteries or winch bar or upgraded front suspension.
• Can be used to pull in any direction (with a few snatch blocks)
• Portable, you can offer it to your mates when they play without you or buy it in a syndicate.

Unfortunately it doesn't add any **** value to the vehicle :D

Elec. winch will be the very last accessory I will put on a 4WD, just after the self cooling cup holders and the fluffy dice on the rear view mirror!

I hear you Greylandy and to confirm, it's certainly not w*#k value I am after simply recovery value. I do have a hand winch which has got me and some other club members out of tight spots on several occasions.......VERY useful piece of kit and like you say nothing really to go wrong or break down assuming it is well maintained and used correctly. However, you only have to use a hand winch once, to appreciate the benefits of an electirc one.

I have had my hand winch for years now and have also had the winch hole in the front of the bull bar for years also as I could not justify fitting a winch costing upwards of $1000. But in the last year or so these other winches have appeared on my radar and as I like to play reasonably hard with our club. I can see real value in an electric winch for $600 and still have my hand winch as back up.......as mentioned before, it will not be used weekly, monthly or even 6 monthly perhaps, but when it is called upon, I can very easily see the $600 being justified straight away:D

Like most discussions on this forum, it really comes back to the sort of driving you are likely to do and how much your wallet can deal with but in my case, I see real value in a $600 vehicle winch.......also lets me repay the favour to other club members who ALWAYS get their winch out when a winch is needed even though my hand winch sits in the back.

Just my thoughts and I think I have just talked myself into a trip to Aldi........will report back:D

If I had the bar to put it in I would seriousely consider the Aldi winch or even the cheaper ebay one. It may not be a warn but then again most manufacturers outsource these days anyway. A lot of a warn might be made in the same factory! I have a tirfor and have only needed it once in six years (bloody hard work) so I wouldn't fork out for a top line winch but a cheapy, especially with 3yr w'ty might come in handy now and again.

For $500.00 - $600.00 for a winch I reckon you should just buy it. The driving you do it will get some use and it would finish off the Mack Truck nicely.
That price sounds like a bargain.

well have the winch bar got the suspension and own a hand winch and yes i am to lazy to use it on long pulls and don't have time to waste hand winching
and for the **** comment that is offensive to me i am sure to many other cheap winch owners ,as i have not bought a winch for **** value /i have not intalled anything on my disco for that reason i own a working farm and all my equipment gets used so when you move out of N beaches into the country and actuaslly use your 4x4 everyday you will realize people don't install stuf on there work vechiles for **** value out here

Okay going by pics alone this winch also looks identical to the T-max winches... i have a tmax one sitting at home to install once i get a decent bar, and Camo on here has the same tmax one which has been used a few times and seems quite good and does what it's intended to do. Also Harry on here has one of the Repco units for a couple years now with no problems. Granted they're not used excessively or for massive hill climbs but have been good for recovery's.

On another note, once had someone tell me... that the beauty of the tmax ones is that supposedly the motor is slightly more powerful than that warn ones... and only cost a third... so you can replace the motor 3 times on a tmax for the same price of one warn motor.... so in reality should buy a cheapo burnt-out warn and put a chinese motor on it

Check out the club only section on GCLRO Loaded for more info on e-bay one and get involved. e-bay one is a 12000lb one - link here - and although only a 12 month warranty, seems to get a good review.

I would have to have Dranged alter my Bull Bar first to accommodate a winch and would not be able to afford it at the moment. Saving for the Coffs Trip.

That's Ok if we all could physically use a hand winch.

A mate of mine borrowed one from work a few years back and we tested it pulling a Kombi up a slight grassy incline.

This convinced us not to use it too often .... it nearly wore us both out.

Calm down thrasher ... the comment was a joke as per the smily face at the end of it!! I'm sure you use "all your equipment on the farm" but this is not the Farmers Weekly forum. We are discussing 4WD equipment used for that purpose and the pros and cons of a cheap electric winch. I proposed the handwinch as an alternative to a cheap elec. winch for "somebody that rarely need one or doesn't do extreme 4wding" .. like the people you were talking about in your previous post .. hence the reason why I quoted your post .. and started my post with "if it only gets used on the rare occasion" Read before you blast brew!
