Very much agree .. they are hard work especially on extreme angles. They make sense to me because of the cost and flexibility they offer. The question also needs to be asked .. how many of us have seen elec winches fail during a recovery or they wear out the battery halfway through ... ? I've seen a few in my time .. yet to see a handwinch fail.Quote:

I would be careful with the wire rope that comes with these winches. A 9mm wire rope is not really strong enough for a 9000lb winch, let alone a 12,000lb one. :eek:
I have a Mile Marker on my truck, came in a plain box with the stickers in the box and not on the winch so thats where they stayed.
It is the same winch that Brawn sell in 8000lb and runs 11mm cable (I think I have never measured it but looks thicker than 9mm) and pulls like the proverbial school boy although has been noisey from day 1 and sucks tonnes of power.
In saying that, I bought it on ebay for $600 as we do a fair bit of touring on our own but nothing narley on our own but I thought it is better than nothing if I did get stuck all though I still have a shovel and jack.
I also have a bad back and would stuggle with a tirfor as I know from pulling tree's over it is more hard work than I want to do when Im on holidays and I dant want to be in pain for a couple of weeks after doing a short winch if I had to.
I have used it probably 6 times in 3 years and the only thing to give trouble has been the solenoids that sometimes dont want to work but after a quick wack they come good but I will get round to replacing them eventually.
I had a Warn 8000lb on a tow truck I used to drive just to drag dead machines on the back and it was taken off and repaired 3 times before we pulled it appart and fixed it properly, the cage on the planetry set wasnt secured properly and just spot welded in place and we were only pulling rolling stock up a 10' ramp.
I havnt pulled mine apart to see how it is put together but it has pulled a couple of Pootrols out from being bogged to the floor pan 1 where I had to drop the landy into a trench and winch my self out later as it was dragging me in but I think the bar will break away before the winch will break so Im happy with mine.
An auto elec mate of mine had a look before I fitted it and went and bought on him self as he said the motor was good quality so I think it is ok.
