I upgraded my wiring loom with a home made one ( easy to make. Dual relay, beefed up wiring ) and used those new blue type halogen H4s, the light is more intense. The blue type H4s give a whiter light instead of the yellow ordinary H4s
In my disco2 I changed to 90/100 globes and it made a really big improvement to the light output. Awsome and cheap. Slowly over time I thought my eyes and night vision were getting worse but the connection into the headlights was deteriorating. In the end I then bought the traxide headlight loom and the light output is awsome again.

I think this is a good point - the problem with most Landrover lights is basically wiring and contact resistance - you replace the bulbs with higher power ones to get more light, and even if there is an immediate increase in light, the wiring and contact resistance gives more voltage drop, which as far as the contacts go at least, will make them deteriorate faster.
Upgrade the wiring first, using Traxide's modification or similar, then fit higher wattage bulbs if you still think you need them.

True, the deterioration was over about 4-5 years though, actually more so in the last 6 months. Contact resistance was exactly the problem and replacement of the plugs that go into the headlight probably would have fixed it, the increased resistance I think stemming from a little mud and dust in there causing a meltdown. But, the new loom is all good also. No doubt the old schoolers would say the new loom is just more to go wrong, especially when the original loom still works, but if it helps....

I bought some Philips +50 H4 globes and tested a few globes in my photography studio using my light meter when I was looking to upgrade teh lights on my Jagur XJ-S. The Philips +50 55/60 put out the almost the same light ( F5.6.1 vs F4.5.9 ) than 6 month old 100/130W Narva globe in the same headlight. I have fitted these globes to all my cars since then.
On the Discovery, I have also replaced all the 100w globes in the spotlight with the Philips +50's ( +30 only for the Hella 1000's) and they are great, produce the same light yet draw half the current.
I have also now also wired up relays for all the lights, (Low/ High / Hella 1000's / 4 x Ziel 180's,) running 20A cable to each light, including the earth lead (direct to battery) That also makes a big difference - I measured the voltage with the engine idling, and now with the 60W Philips and relays I get 13.4V at the headlight instead of 12.3V with the 130w Narva globes without relays.
