    Piranha dual battery tray

    Hi All,

Has anyone used one of the Piranha dual battery trays in a Defender (cat. BTDEF)? The specs on their web-site:

    http://www.piranhaoffroad.com.au/pro...dlevehicle.htm

seems to indicate it will fit 2 batteries 12" x 12".

I am wondering if this is correct, as the standard battery for the Defender is longer than 12", and using one of these trays would mean junking the original battery!

Any 1st hand experiences would be useful.

    Cheers,

    Lionel

Sure, but do you know anything about the Piranha tray - this is what I'm trying to get some info. about.

I think the use of a tray in a Defender is a pretty pointless and unessesary expense. I have two Optima batteries under the seat of my 130 and used a peice of 3mm aluminium tread plate as the base.... a couple of threaded posts and a clamp across the top. Job jobbed.

Infact....you can get three optima batteries under the seat box! Obviously the Optima is smaller than the standard Defender starter.

I know that Piranha make custom trays for other 4x4's where under bonnet battery instalations are not so straight forward...I think these are probably worth their weight when it comes to saving time in fabrication, head aches etc.

For a Defender....it ain't rocket science getting two batteries into such an easy application. I'd say save your money and put it towards something like a DB180s battery management system.

I know the makers of the Piranha tray go to great lengths to point out the non-corrosive properties of the product (cad plated as opposed to powder coated etc). If you went with the Optima type spirocell batteries you won't have an acid corrosion problem anyway.

    Regards.

This is what I will probably end up doing.

Actually, this is what I am checking out - whether it's worth spending a bit of money to make the job a bit easier, as I don't have any workshop facilities for metal cutting etc.

Have you seen the Piranha tray? This is what I am trying, so far without success, to get information about. I am getting well-meaning advice on alternatives, for which I am grateful, but I was hoping for some specific 1st hand knowledge, from a forum member who has used or seen the Piranha tray

    Cheers,

    Lionel

I went through the same hassle with another make...pictures all showed a different model, and even the retailer and distributor hadn't seen it, which didn't inspire confidence, as they couldn't tell me how it fitted!

I'd ring Piranha and ask if they can email you a couple of pics.

In the end, I went to a shop to see one, which I'm now going to use.

Yes, the information on the web-site is very sketchy, so I think I'll take your advice and ring Piranha, unless someone else replies who has actually seen it.

    Thanks.

Right, was in a shop yesterday who sell this stuff, and although they didn't have the tray in, they had a drawing of it in the Piranah book. It is basically two oblong frames in what is probably galvanised angle iron, stuck together to form a bigger rectangle that can hold two batteries individually. The fitting notes made it sound as though it doesn't level out the floor, so you'd still have to do this - so worth checking that point with them too.

The notes also mentioned it won't take the bigger (longer) starter battery in the newer Defenders either.

Personally, considering it was dearer than the Scorpion Racing one I had to look at (Which is a much nicer unit and does sit flush and level in the floor by the looks of it, but is built around two Optimas or Exide Maximas/Orbitals) I wouldn't pay for it.
