Thread: recovery point?

    recovery point?

    i have read through all the recovery point threads.

    my discovery 1 has a landrover genuine parts brush bar fitted,and it has some meaty looking eyelets on the bottom of it, the bars 4 attaching bolts go through the chassis.
    im wondering if these are a suitable recovery point



    ill be using the haymen reese tow hitch pin for the rear recovery point!

    My Disco 1 had a brush bar as well originally. I was forced to recover of it once and I can recommend that you don't. I used it bridled but it sill distorted the bar. It would be OK for towing.

    You are far better (and safer) getting recovery points like those offered by troutbeck, ritters, graeme coopers etc.

    Absolutely no way. As above - fit a proper one, or run a couple of loops of wire rope around the axle (properly swaged or course).

    I wouldn't be using those as recovery points. The tube used for those brush bars is normally quite thin and those brackets are welded on at the wrong angles. What you will probably end up doing is twisting the bar and damaging your grill and bonnet, ( at the very least.)

    I tried towing a small tree stump out with mine once...... DID YOU KNOW THAT IT CAN SWIVEL ON IT"S ATTACHING BOLTS?
    Mine's top was remarkably closer to my bonnet, any more and I would have a big dent in the bonnet.
    The bolt heads just sort of slid in the slots.

    thats actually a front tie down point. The normal bolt in eyelet ones are removed to fit the bar.

    i checked that out, and it does move with a decent shove,so thanks fellas thats a big no for those attaching points

    ill look at whats been posted already to fit to it

    it seems to me ,to be absolutely usless makeing the bar with these eyelets,if the bar isnt strong enough to use them!

    my bar started to crack removed it rewelded it ,tube 1.6mm cracked again made new one do not use for recover point,12.5 mm bolts are 8.8 grade

    I note that you still retain the normal bumper and skirts and as such these above mentioned recovery points will bolt on but will not allow easy access and when the snatch strap or winch rope gets tight it WILL tear the bottom skirt.
    You will have to remove the lower skirt or cut a larger hole where the original tow points were mounted as the after market recovery points sit to one side of the chassis rail. The standard tow points bolt to both sides of the rail and the loop protrudes forward through the skirt. (not recommended as a recovery point).
    PS if you find a recovery point that is built for a Disco with a standard bumper please let me know.

    I have the same a bar. It says on the factory sticker not for recovery, howerver I have had it inspected by people who actually 4wd ( more than one person from a couple of companies) I replaced the bolts with 12mm graded bolts and moved it to where it will not rotate any further. I have been winched out of mud towing a camper trailer, Snatched across creeks, Pulled up hills and had no problems and no signs of damage.

    The top hoop is starting to crack but that has been because of vibration not recovery. At the end of the day you take the advice of everybody and make your own guess.

    I do always use both points and a tree trunk protecter as a bridle. Any recovery point is only as strong as the metal its bolted to and the disco chassis isn't too thick.
