Now the serpentine belt has let go.

At precisely 100,007 kms. Split in two, thinner bit mangled, the major bit intact, but jumped.

All this on the M2 in Saturday's rain. Engine started missing, noticed the temp gauge is hopping about in the red. Pull over, obvious the power steering isn't working. And steam appears.

    Just after a service too.

Spent yesterday putting a spare belt on. A couple of hours figuring how it ran, 15 minutes to run it, another couple of hours to figure out a way of letting the tensioner off.

Couldn't have done it without some phone calls, thanks Slunnie.

Anyway, it fires up ok, but theres a death rattle in the top end. Sounds a bit like a big end knocking.

    I can do without this!

    Regards
    Max P

........................& now you know, make yourself a diagram looking from the front of where the belt lays, so in future it's a doddle to fit one in 5 minutes.

Then file that in a couple of places ie, User Handbook & WM.

Bit of a drama you had. I hope it's something easy & fixable.

you would want to hope that they changed it when they serviced it, if they didnt and they were supposed to me thinks they should be paying for all or at least some of the repairs

Ron can't have this all to himself now can he Tusker..

4bee I seem to recall about $60-odd, did mine a few weeks ago. Go armed with your engine number, there is a serial break - 2 different length belts.

Thanks Dan. My original lasted 8 years as I recall, & I kept it for a backup. The one that was fitted as a replacement was replaced only because it looked a bit "cracky" but was still ok.

I replaced that one with my original which still looks fine & not at all "cracky".

Must get another soon. Two belts in 11 years ain't tooooo bad.

ditto 4bee, kept the old one to stash in the car somewher in case. mine was looking cracked and didn't know how long since previous owner had done it.
ditto pat303, not worth skimping on.
    100,000k or 5 yrs i'd reckon on.
