Thread: Defender heater blower

No, a poor contact will not blow fuses. Either there is an intermittent short, or perhaps the motor was seized but came loose (an electric motor that won't turn is likely to draw enough current to blow a fuse). But I'd put money on a wire somewhere with an intermittent short.

Normally the only problem with the heater blower is because it is full of crap. They fill with mud and water as the vent on the wing top just scups it all into the heater blower. Which is the first thing that anything that goes though the vent in the wing top meets
So check there is no mud or crap in the fan and therefore causing it it blow a fuse.

I had the same problem after a downpour. Blower stopped working and I checked the fuse which I was pleased to see was blown (my 300Tdi has a fuse for the fan alone btw) so I replaced it but alas it still doesn't work.

If the blower shorted due to moisture, which is highly likely as I left the flaps open over night, somebody told me that the fuse is there to save the short from cooking everything - not to save the blower. Could this be true?

The purpose of a fuse is to stop fires, not protect equipment (we use diodes for that).

yep fuses normally only protect wiring. which in turn stops your car burning to the ground

Thanks guys--I will check all of the above. What I do remember is that when I drove away, there was water on the ground, as if the air con had been on, which it certainly hadn't. I will investigate. Thanks for your input

My 96 130 defender did exactly the same thing, changed the fuse a couple of times, worked for a while then blew again, replaced the fuse the last time and noticed the heater came on when the switch was off, finally traced it back to one of the three wires from the loom just before the heater box was caught between the body and the box and was shorting it out

A bit of tape and back in business.

the airbox may be full of water due to a blocked drain.......
remove the plastic screen from the passenger side guard......and check to see if the rubber drain is clear.......it blocks with mud........
if the box is full of mud......clear out the drain the get the garden hose in there and clean it all out........

you may be actually sucking water up into the fan motor and shorting it out.......?
