    Diff & Propshaft play

Ive searched through this site and read up on all Diff related topics, but still have some Q's. My 1985 RRC has some fix's I need doing, but before I do these, I want to know if I can delay the fix's. Problems with Diff and Propshaft are:

Whilst lying under car and handbrake off, I can turn the rear propshaft about 1/2in in either direction, the movement being taken up by the diff, not the propshaft or U-joints (I checked these too). The propshaft has about 1mm play, if that, but still cant tell theres wear. So, question is, is the diff centre stuffed or can I abuse it a little further before replacing? I will use the propshaft a little more I think.

Whilst I was under car, I also checked the front end. No play in the front diff () but an incredible play in the propshaft (theres no rubber dust cover, only see the clamps with the remains). Theres probably a good 3mm play when twisting the two halves of the prop in the opposite direction.

So, what should I do? Should I invest in a second hand front propshaft and new U-joints? As for the rear diff, should I worry about that now?

    Hope this is clear.

    Cheers,

Id be doing the panic stations thing about the front propshaft and not too paniced about the rear diff at this point unless there was oil coming from the pinion seal or axial/longitudinal movement of the drive flange, theres about 4 places between the pinion adn the wheels where dive slop can accumulate. But keep an eye on it....

Front propshaft failures while interesting to see the end results of are generally not bank balance friendly.

Thanks... I was thinking the same as ive read some horror stories of front props failing, collapsing and causing all sorts of damage. Will see to it first thing.

providing your RRC has a real CDL you can get away with removing the front propshaft and only driving on the rear axle as a short term fix.

Ive done it from both sides having bent the front shaft and on a later trip snapped the rear diff..

Kewl J, I was going to ask if you did have something available.. I also need some other bits and pieces. Will call you during the week to discuss.

Hopefully I wont have to resort to that idea blknight, but good to keep in mind.
