george i'm in W.A. well i thought i had the trifecta, because when it
went pear shaped it, had oil in loom, blown exhaust gaskit, & the turbo
let go all in 1week. but when i found metal in the sump, checking oil
pump bolt, i sent it to a landy mechanic i know. he found when he
pulled it down that 1 bolt that holds the timing chain tensioner had
broken, the bolt head was floating around the timing gear. this had
broken some time earlier, dont know how long but the bolt was rounded
off & bits of alloy have gone through the motor wearing out the big
end bearings & other bits & pieces. so the motor was on its way out
even if the other things had'nt happened. so now i've got to either
fix it lots of $$$$$$ 2nd hand motor will it last????? or different motor
back to the ever realiable V8, can gas it later on.
most of the options cost $$$$ just going to put it in the shed for a
while till i deciede what to do....

That is about par for a Td5, and could go higher if the crank requires replacement. As Dave says, to warranty ANY of the rebuild, the turbo has to be checked/ recoed, the radiator DEFINATELY has to be cleaned and tested at the very least, these engines have timing chain, tensioner and guides etc which are far more costly to replace than a timing belt and idlers , The cylinder head recoed or even replaced if severe overheating was to blame, then you have the Unit injectors, the cam, followers and injector rockers, on early models the cam canloose its hard facing, these are about $1300 to replace. They are a far more complicated motor than the Tdi, and commensurately far more expensive to repair.
$8K to $10K is fairly cheap when a Tdi can be up to $8k when new head, labour and rad etc is factored in. Some places quote only on the rebuild, NOT a drive in drive out price, which includes EVERYTHING, as it suggests.

FWIW I would look at a used tested engine, and keep whats left of yours as spares, injectors, sensors, etc. For example, I've recently found a local wrecker with one for about $6K COMPLETE, its a disco engine but low K's and was well serviced etc prior to the accident. That is a whole engine, wiring harness, turbo, exhaust, intake etc etc. Not bad for everything included and can still be run tested.

Give some thought to the good S/H engine option, as swapping motors for an earlier one etc can void insurance and transport etc. Not to mention a bell housing change, etc etc.

jbell110, sounds like you've had a rough time.

If you go with the V8 option how will you go with rego costs and compliance with rules and insurance issues? I doubt if it would be an easy changeover.

Yes it does sound like the rebuild is expensive but don't forget that the lions share of any work done is labour. Even rebuiling a V8 probably would cost heaps if it's done by a mechanic, and yes I know the experts will bag me and say do it yourself. We are not all capable or wish to do a major rebuild.

Best of luck with your final choice.

Oh and by the way, what year is the Defender and how many k's has it done?

IMho you'll be better of with a second hand yd5, rebuild your turbo to put back on it and salvage whats left of yours for parts....

    I'll go you halves.....

in all seriousness if you want to go that route, send me the old donk once you have a new one and very lovingly I'll strip it down and send the parts back to you or to anyone else who wants to pay for what I can salvage for you..

I want to strip a td5 and get a shed load of pics and measurements before I go frelling around with big reds.

    Jeff,

I agree with the guys that suggest look at a secondhand TD5... When you start taking a close look, you will realise that swapping from TD5 to V8 involves a LOT more than just the motor.

Different Radiator, Different ECU, wiring loom (ECU is a totally different location.) I believe but I'm not positive that there is a transmition difference too (Front Driveshaft is different.. so I figure something must be set up differently...)

I think you would find that your V8 conversion will cost you a LOT more than you expect.Unless you go for a pre Disco II V8 and then as the guys mentioned you are likely to run into all sorts of other issues..

    Ouch!
I was luck with the bottom end. It was still like new. Guys who looked at it were impressed. No slack and still had the honing marks. Not even run in yet.

I have no idea how much the bottom half costs to do but would expect lots. Second hand engine might be the go. If I knew how much I was going to spend I probably would have bought the one on ebay at the time for $3500.

As for putting it in the shed if it helps you might be lucky. Mine is a leae vehicle so I had to have it running asap and didn't have the $$$ to pay a workshop to do it all. It is a big job stripping it down.

    Good luck.

Thats disgusting for 146,000kms. LR should at least be giving you some discount on parts required. We buy oilers cause the should last 500,000kms. You normally get 200-300,000 kms out of a petrol.
LRA will stick their head in the sand but worth a try.

They would do if it has been service on time and by a LR Dealer every time.

I know LR have in some occasions gone above and beyond what was required.

You support them, and they will support you!!!

    Hi Jeff
Pickles Auctions in Perth have 3 Discos in this weeks damaged auction.
You may have to wait till mon arvo or email them as there are no pics or details listed yet. This is normal, they list all the vehicles then gradually add all the pics/details.
