It is a vibration damper bolted to the diff. My P38A has one on the front diff.

G,day I am just wondering what exactly does this do.? I am assuming that it has something to do with restricting the amount of articulation. I have not seen one on any other discos. So Do i need It.

Ron has it spot on, and the wire restrainer is for when it falls off.
The wire stops it smashing bits on your car (sump/gearbox) or the car behind you![]()
I thought it was steel and used it as a jack point - it fell apart and is actually fragile and made of rubber - is a damper for the front axle - I had mine off for a while and did not seem to make much difference but is obviously there for a reason - they are real cheap second hand and easy to put in.

Thanks guys. I have had the disco for 5 years now and i am still finding new things to pull apart, just cause its there.![]()
Bit different to the one on my 98 disco 300Tdi. Mine only has 1, consisting of an engine mount with a larger (than in that pic) steel disc.
Hi,
Its a torsional vibration damper, if you have a look at your diff the diff centre is way out of centre so to reduce any vibration you will notice that the damper is on the longest axle side of the diff.(all to do with rotational force)
Dont remove it the engineers that put it there know far more than us.
Including me.
Cheers Aston
Could the wire just be an earth ?
