I have 35W HID driving lights. I also have Drivesafe's relay/harness kit, which improves the normal lights.
The normal lights seem reasonably white, that is until the HID's are switched on. Then when I have to dip the lights, the normal lights are quite yellow and poor.
With the HID conversions, I would avoid getting too high of a colour temperature - I hear the reflections can be troublesome from dust etc. I get bad reflections from road signs.
What would you guys who have HID hi/low headlights think if you only had them and no spotlights?
Just wondering if HID hi/low would be better than normal headlights (with loom upgrade) and good normal bulb type spotties (like Lightforce 240 Blitz).
The main thing with the colour temperature is that the higher the temperature the more blue the light is, for the really high temperatures they are even purple. And after a certain point the higher the kelvin rating the lower the light output in lumens. The ones I have are 4300K and they are white. Go any higher and they start getting blue.
There is a really good site for info on HIDs, it's http://www.intellexual.net/hid.html Very VERY informative and I recommend you read it if you are looking into getting HIDs
Because the High Low HIDs use the same globe, low beam appears to be REALLY bright, and when you flick to high beam you sorta get dissaponted because you get used to the intensity of the low beam. Overall they aren't bad. But the HID spotties put the icing on the cake.
I would definatly go the HID headlight globes first. I have both, the headlights and spotlights. I did the headlights first and they are increadable! I have the 4300K but if had the choice I'd probably go the 5000K (If they make them) or the 6000K. I had the headlights upgraded with the Hi/Low type, they were a little more but were worth it, at the time I also had 170lightforce spotties with the light blue filter, and they were excellent!!
However I had seen a friends hilux with the IPF HID's ($1600 worth mind you) an they were mind blowing, and seeing as you can't convert the LF to accept the HID's I swapped them for a set of the rectangle IPF's that a mate wasn't using. Put the HID 6000K kit through them and WOW!
They are woth their weight in gold up here in the NT, for driving back from fishing after dark you can't compare anything close to them.
And seeing as I've done the headlights as well, when I dip to low beam you don't get that "where am I going" effect.
And as a bonus, the power that all the lights are using are less than the original 100w headlights that use to be installed:D
Only problem is now all my mates want me to install the kits into their cars
Cheers
Larns can you PM me more info on the kits you use. I've got IPF900XS that take an H9 and since I put the IPF Fatboy bulbs in to my headlights I've been wondering what to do to improve the spotties.
Sorry for the delay in responding. I tried some of the sliding type H4 HID inserts but I was not happy with them. Probably just bad luck as I know plenty of people who are very happy with them. I bought an HID headlight kit with two bulbs on the one stem so there is no moving parts and I am very happy with them. I was looking for a similar kit with 4 lots of ballasts which let high and low beam stay on together but I could not find anyone who would ship them from the USA to here. The headlights are now so good that I needed to remove one of the Spread beam lenses from my super oscars and replace with a long range lense as the headlights made the super oscars with spreadbeam (and 42 watt HID kits) redundant.
I got my headlight kit from here http://www.fuelsaver.com.au/shop/ind...e890a39bf3a1b6
Bloody expensive but I am happy with the results.

You bought an HID kit from Hiclone?
