TD5 Truth

Greetings,
Through out my time of viewing and reading about TD5 Disco's/Defenders, Iam still mystified as to what the truth about the reliability and some what bad reporting of the engine.

Ive had mine since new and is a 99 model, and yes some things have broken down, and ever sinece my mechanic left the expansion tank cap off, Ive wondered about installing a coolant alarm, but the car run beautifully and for its meager 163Klm, I reckon she has a lot left in her.

I just readan article in the English Mag, LRO and it has an article about the development of the TD5 and is most interesting.

Main points of topic were cross flow heads, which allow the engine to perform much better than TDI motors,amongst a array of other points.

Apples for apples, I would have the TD5 anyday over a TDI 200/300, but am specualtive as to other peoples true opinions on the TD5.

I am not a hard core off roader, and when I find the time we will do a small trip,but it does get a good work out.

I was under the car the other weekend, and Im sure you could say, its just driven off the shoroom floor, and for appearances, its got to be one the best looking Disco's around and its bloody comfy and quiet.

So I guess what Im saying is , tell me the key points I should be looking at to keep the great experience's Ive had with the TD5 going, and what to keep a check on.

i have a 2000 TD5 fender with 175,000k's its been chipped since almost new (3weeks)

and i can tell you this thing gets a floggin

no matter what i do to it she just keeps going

never had a engine problem yet, so i'm happy with my TD5

but my mechanic reckons i'm a lucky man

I am holding a large piece of wood , and banging on walls with my crossed fingers when I say this.

I have had a great run out of my TD5. its done about 160,000kms. most up Cape York, and quite often pulling about two tonne of off road van. I have heard stories of early engines giving head troubles and of course there is the oil pump bolt. But I think generally speaking the TD5 engine it self has had a good run,, most new engines will have a few teething problems when first released and really the confirmed numbers of the above failures seem to be quite low on a world basis. I mean I hear these stories but keep meeting people who are nothing but wrapped with the engine

Apart from being V8 man and not being able to get used to the bloody noise of these things, TIC,,, I have been very impressed with the engine

The engine is remarkable for a 2.5 lt,,,(mine is chipped) combined with the auto it is sometimes easy to forget you dont have a Series 1 3.9 V8 under the bonnet (sort of

)

It seems to perform across the rev range far more comfortably than most the jap things we have at work,, as a complete vehicle I mean. The Disco even seems more accepting of my demands than the diesel 100 series we have at work,,, in most situations

stay in front of the maintenance, pay attention to what comes out and listen to her. Landrovers are like women, great fun while they're healthy but as soon as something starts to go wrong they begin to moan a bit. Catch it early and its usually not too painful. Let it go too long and it'll bite you in the wallet.

Tnank's all.Bl Knight, I think your on the money.Listen and learn is agood thing, and thats been my gut feeling with all my landies/Rangies Ive had.But this was the first Deisel I purchased and Im a little paranoid about blowing another life savings on a D2, like I did with a Freelander.
