I drove through a small patch of mud on a farm today.

The farmer was a bit worried and when we just sailed through and out the other side he said "my 80 series would never had made it through that!"

Although for a split second I though "Now he tells me!"

...you could also try selecting a higher gear.

Many years ago I saw a film of a mud competition. The cars started at the top of a hill and drove down the track / trench till they got stuck. The one to make it the furthest won.

There was an assortment of Land Cruisers, some with Chev V8s, some hotted up Suzukis etc (1970-80s cars) and their tactic was to get momentum and keep it going. They'd splash through and create jets of flying mud, before coming to an abrupt halt.

Then came a SII Land Rover, it just waddled down and through to the end - like a little duck. He didn't allow a need for momentum to cause him to break traction. Probably he didn't have the horsepower to break traction . But the point being, keep it going, but don't spin.

What tires are you running? Standard tires are useless in mud.
In ruts you can turn the wheels back and forth, this allows the side biters to work for you.
Old landies (and military jeeps) with the skinny military tires were good in mud as long as there was a hard bottom that they could churn down to. They would not get to the end very fast, but usually made it through.

Easy in, than add power as you need it. spin tyres to clear treads of mud so they bite. If you stop, try reverse. If that don't work, call for help.

Dont stop, use the right foot instead of the left foot, those tyres you are running should get you through a fair bit. you can get through mud that deep if you have the right momentum, mind you it also depends how long a stretch you are pushing through
