    R380 gearbox damage

Hi all, managed to lose the oil from my G/box and cooked the bearings.Very noisy in all gears.Limped home in Fourth gear after refilling the box.Anyone with a good spare G/Box for a TD5 130 for a fair price? Also any advice on removal and repair would be appreciated.Cheers,130man.

If its only bearings and the rest is in good nick and time permits, think about removing and rebuilding. Bearings are reasonably cheap, shop around and take reference numbers, Timken, CBC etc may be able to supply. I know when I had my old Pajero done it cost me $1200 for a friend to do it including a new clutch and workshop labour at short notice and it was he that told me bearing kits are cheap I can not remember who he got the kits through but apparently the Pajero boxes and R380 are similar, could have been Repco or Coventry's.
    Good Luck.
PS At the time I had the Pajero done Mitsubishi quoted me $3500 for the same job.

CraigE, thanks for the reply.I am in the process of removing the box.One opinion is that the synchro rings may well be damaged by heat, however,I stopped as soon as the noise began so am hopeful the damage is minimal.Cheer, 130man.

sounds nasty. Have a real good look at gear faces and any running shaft surface for any discolouration too

Curious how you lost the oil, seal gone or broken oil cooler line or a filler/drain plug come loose ?

My sympathies, funny that leaking gear oil and pajeros came up in the same breath,( well almost) when i had my pajero, I went through 2 gearboxes in 14 years, they are renowed for leaking oil and you don;t find out till later, the damage is done when you hear the noise. In my opinion no quick fixes, replace the lot.
The last g/box i got was from a place near brisbane, exchange, made it easier. the reality of the boxes is, any half competent person can do a rebuild and the bearings etc are easy to find.

If you end up buying another gearbox and have the old one still, let us know - I'd be interested in it for parts.

My condolences. I cooked my LT77 at 406,000km.

I had to replace quite a few items, main shaft etc as I was upgrading the shaft and the rear output gear to the latter type. Karcraft had all the parts in stock, they were promptly despatched and I rebuilt it with the help of an experienced mechanic / mate (so I only paid mates rates for a days labour).

All up it was under $2K, which worked out pretty well for a rebuilt box.

You may as well factor in a clutch replacement while you have everything apart.

I hope it works out not too expensive for you.

not nice,,, know that feeling, but take heart although the shifting will be rotten due to fatigued syncros with a good oil in it the box will hang on for bloody ages (ty landrover overengineers) how stuffed you are will depend on the noise it was making.

A continual grinding noise (slide to peices of flat bar across each other on the flats to simulate) in all gear will generally be bearing wear with a little tooth noise thrown in from the shafts expanding due to heat.

a whirrring/ whirtlling kind of noise will be tooth wear/damage. and wont be as apparent if in 4th gear it will still be there as all the gears are engaged but not as agressively as they arent doing any work.

removing the top of the shifter box will allow access with an endoscope to eyeball whats what but my opening guess is that with new bearings and syncros you might just get away with it.. The rebuild isnt all that hard and with a good DTI and feelers is a DIY.

Hi everyone, transmission still in the truck. Was advised to take the t/box off the g/box to make it safer and easier to remove both.Followed the Rave instructions but was unable to do the last bit where it says to raise the low/high range lever and reveal the nut holding the transfer box to the gearbox. Two of the hi/low lever housing bolts came out with effort but the other two refused to move and began to round off. What to do? This whole process took me all day and I need to get this repaired.Helpful suggestions welcome. 130man.
