Luggage space in D1 Vs D2

I've got a 1993 Rangie which I love, but am thinking about getting a Disco as I think I will need to run diesel if I want to do some of the "big trips", ie. Cape York, Pilbra, Simmo, etc.

I don't really like the luggage space in the disco's but understand that the Series 2 has a bigger luggage area.

Is this so and how much bigger is it.

Its a lot bigger. The dimensions of the D2 are basically an extra 17cm added behind the rear seats. Lots more space

My Weaco fridge CF50 fits long ways in the back of my D1 with one handle removed and that leaves room for luggage along side the fridge which is plenty as long as you pack properly.

The side pockets are useless so Im going to turn them into water tanks when I get the time and if you put in a cargo barrier there is plenty of stacking room.

The D2 is deffinatly better for luggage space and have more power and are more comfy but you are limited to what mods you can do and keep it legal and the electronics for the driveline ABS and suspention but their about the only draw backs to the D2.

The D1 in good nick will be good value for money but if you want a bit more modern the D2 would be the way to go.

    yup,, exactly 8 inches.
the fridge can now go "longways"

The best way is to fit a reputable cargo barrier

    and go UP.

I've got cargo drawers and an 80L Waeco in the back of my Disco1. Not much room left after that

I've got a cargo barrier though so can put stuff on top of the fridge. There is just enough room on one side of the fridge for a 20L water jerry can.

The D2 is a lot bigger in the back but the wheel base is the same ,results in alot more overhang. Also I have heard the D2 can't be bored out( no oversize pistons available) this may be a problem if it a high mileage car.

The extra overhang of a D2 has always had me wary, my D1 is quite sensitive to overloading in the rear as it is but then I've never actually heard anyone mention balance issues in a D2.
I assume this is why ACE was introduced to help overcome this.

By the way, as a fridge is the most contentious issue to D1 owners, I went with a 47L evacool fibreglass which just fits lengthways, one reason being this is the only one on the market of this size which can operate as a fridge/freezer, waeco & engel omly offer this in 80L.

When I last visited cape york about six years ago ( gee time flies) I had no trouble with getting Petrol, even premium was available most the way. The V6 Pajero has a 90litre tank and I only took one jerry as back up, which I didn't need.
PS. We did the Telegraph track both ways.

Sorry old zook but you can use any fridge as a fridge freezer, you just keep your frozens in the bottom, a bit of styrene between and then your fridge stuff on top, set it for about 3 deg and at the bottom it will be sub temps.

It is a bit of a bugger to get the stuff out but if you only have a 50 ltr weaco then this is what you do.

Nothing wrong with an evacool though, just thought Id go off topic for a sec.

I havnt had any dramas with loading our D1, I have a big plastic box with everything like our recovery equipment etc in it and then the tool box and then the fridge.

I can fit a Jerry can each side in the pockets and then 2 small suitcases on top and all the little stuff scattered around like camp over on top of the tool box and billy in the left pocket etc etc.

You just cant through everything in, and think about what you buy some times as not many people really need a 20 ltr camp oven so why buy one when a 5 ltr one will surfice.

I think if you were using it off road regularly then you wouldnt go or the D2 for extra luggage area as the extra overhang kills it off road, even mine hits the towbar on stuff everytime we go away so I could imagine what I would hit in a D2 but thats just my opinion.
