    Disco 96 v8i - Lock Nut on Wheel Bearings

    Discovery 1996 v8i.

    I'm looking at the rather large lock nut and other nut inside that hold the front wheel bearings in place. Look like it measures about 52mm (metric) - not sure how big in inches.

    Where do you get a tool to fit something that big - that doesn't costs an arm and leg (and probably useful for just this job) ?
    I'm guessing a socket would be best ( I have a set with 1/2' inch drive) but 32mm is the biggest. I check a local parts retailer - don't stock that big on shelves. Huge monkey wrenches are too cumbersome to fit inside the surround.

    Had to use a set of Channel Lock pliers to get it done up to a point. Need something better.

    Rough as guts but a cold chisel and hammer , if your really stuck, to do it up that is.

    Places like four wheel drives sell them (52 mm is right by the way )

    About $10 - 20 usually. They call them a hub nut spanner. Looks liek a big socket with a hole through it to put a bar (or screwdriver) to turn it.

    It'd help if you update your profile so we know where you are.

    In Sydney you can get them at Graeme Cooper in St Peters or Karcraft in Silverwater.

    Or if you're near the Inner West, come over and borrow mine.

    It's also pretty common to do it with the slip joint pliers.

    It's worth doing a search, there are a fair few threads dealing with this, and a number of tutorial on the net with pictures.

    The trick, if IIRC, is to do the nut up tight, spin the wheel, tighten again to make absolutely sure the bearings are sitting square, then back the nut off, do it up to nip tight, and bash the lock washer over.

    I think it's called a BOX Spanner and has holes in the side to pu your screwdriver etc in.

    Appreciate the loaner offer also. I'm actually outer northwest Sydney - so will search around.

    To start the job I ended up using the rough old 'cold chisel and hammer' - Was really locked on tight !!! Filed it back all nice and neat before tightening with slip pliers.

    Just needed to do up the inside nut slightly - just the slightest amount of play - repacked grease - now all is tight as.. proverbial..

    Sounds like the $10-$20 Hub nut spanner is the go.
    I gotta get me one of them soon !!

    I picked one up last time I replaced and repacked the bearings. $10 from LR parts supplier in West Melbourne
