Am I dreaming re more go with new bearings??

Sounds stupid, but after fitting new bearings to the ac & serp belt idler's etc, the Disco seems to go much harder off the mark. And no I havent been drinking or smoking........

Two of three bearings where totally RS, would crap bearings course so much drag?

I cant get over the differance, and I do drive it a fair bit, so Im open to ideas why.......

    My experience would say yes.

I would not have believed that the pulleys could have such an effect on a torquey little engine like the TD5, it if it hadnt happened to me.

Heading north just out of Mackay, sitting on a hundred k and no sign of trouble all day. stopped to turn into the mobil just out of town and the car stalled, wouldnt start again,,, struggled to turn over, like a battery going flat.

RACQ tow into town,,still under warranty at the time so car in to the dealers next day. Dealer suspected gearbox was dragging or something. Two days later it came down to two pulleys where shot, one had given up the ghost, presumably as I pulled up to turn into the garage it seised.

I also experienced that the car seemd to perform better after the pulleys where replaced. the fuel economy had been really bad up until then also.

    andrew,
I would agree certainly, I have had a 300Tdi 'sieze up' due to alternator bearing failure. I would suggest that the pulley diameter of all 3 of your drives being larger than one alternator pulley, it is quite probable that your performance has increased. Also, the differences between running fixed blade fans, viscous fans and electric thermofans are quite significant.

I hope this is true. I replaced the bearings on my A/C idlers on Thursday and haven't driven the car since. Both of mine very fairly tight - I was surprised that they weren't making more noise.
Probably won't need to go anywhere til Monday so will report back!

My alternator bearings went at 288k and there was a progressive decrease in power until it seized at which point I smelt the worst odour humanly known, a burning vee belt.

Being a 200tdi I just hacked the belt off, piffed it and kept driving for another 220 kms before getting it rebuilt.
