What's gone wrong with your R380 mate? If you have the right info on hand and access to the right tools and don't rush things i believe it's worth having a go at most jobs. Hav'nt tried a vehicle gearbox yet though.
I'm sure someone on here will be able to help out with the right advice though. Good luck mate

It's got a horrid whine noise - it will be either a total pull apart job and replace all the bearings OR if it looks too bad (ware on the gears/main shaft/pinion shaft/etc.) it will be replaced with a reconditioned unit. Either way it is soooooo not what I need right now!!

Take a look here. I know it's about a clutch change on a Discovery but it shows you how to detach the gearbox from the engine. Once it's detached all you have to do is drop the gbox/tbox.

SA is just a bit far for me today - however to make your life easier if you DIY, you'll need a long extension bar for the top two bellhousing nuts, and use 6 point (ie impact set) sockets on those bellhousing nuts because they have a tendency to round off if you use 12pt or metrinch. Don't forget to remove the fan when you lower the gearbox crossmember (otherwise it hits the radiator) and take the handbrake drum off first, followed by the T/C. Then the R380 is almost managable by one person. The fiddly bits are drilling the rivets on the rubber shield under the console ( you can tap a thread and use bolts to secure it after) and removing the breather connections. Otherwise it's not too bad.

Thanks for the advice... any idea how long it might take to remove the gearbox for a first timer - I'm guessing 1 full day (dusk till dawn) assuming I don't need to go and buy any stupid tools (like the star socket on the gearbox filler plug - why do they do it to us?)!

For the record, ask for a 'TORX 55' socket.

If you pull the engine mounts out you can lower it down enough to get to the 2 top bellhousing bolts. How urgently do you need to get the box out ( silly question i know) but i will be in adeliade from next friday for a week and will most likely have a spare day or 3.

Well, I guess the noise is there, it is getting worse each day so the sooner the better... However, I can't get to it untill end of next week and if it means I could have some help from a Wizard, I can wait a little while longer!!!
