Thermostat temp range which should i use

Ok guys just wondering which temp range thermostat i should use in my 4.4v8 in the rangie i can get either a 74c,82c or 88c these are to fit the std 4.4 2 barell intake not the std rangie cd intake .....

Im not sure which one is in there now but i think it is stuck open as it wont stay warm on a run it drops temp to far and i think this may cause probs over a long period as the engin wont stay at the opperating temp ....

Il pull the thermostat in the morning to see what temp it is and to see if its working proper which i doubt it is as its the only reason i can think of that is causing the engin temp to stay so low while at speed it will only warm up whilst in trafic and the thermo holds it at the rite temp no probs and it hasent gone past 1/3 on the gauge yet at idle or just above runing through the trafic at low speeds ....

The Tuning Rovers book recommends the coolest thermostat for carbies, as the hotter the engine the looser the sleeves. I would put in 82, just to be sure that the water in the oil is vapourised.
For injection , 88C is really the minimum,as the injection enriches to 80C, and IMHO 2 degrees is not enough headroom.

What do you think for a 300TDI as well, didnt want to warm up at all the other night, was just under normal op temp all night.

I have never checked the thermostat so I should probably change it now.

I have both a water temp and oil temp gauges and i find once my oil is up to operating temp it stays just on it never over unless it idles around slow for a bit and then it comes up to temp and water will come up to temp and stay there tho i can go for a blast down the road at about 60 k's for about 3 miniuts run and the temp is back in the off position it cools that fast as its a near new 3 core rad the thermo only comes on after about 5 mins of slow movin or idle ...

Also i havent had the time today to pull the thermostat and check it so its on for tomoro now heres hopen

The Rave CD quotes the thermostat rating to be 88 degrees
    Hope that helps Damo

always use the genuine thermostat on a tdi... the non genuine seem to cause problems i am told.

just fitted a vdo mechanical gauge to mine and it only ever gets to 70deg celsius so i need to do my themostat as well.

was going to ask a couple of questions on the subject this morning myself.
