Temporary loss of power on TD5

I was driving my TD5 yesterday travelling at about 80 km/h and noticed there was no more power available to accelerate. Coming down a hill and few minutes later the same thing happended. I stopped and turned off the engine of the disco. After a couple of minutes all was OK.

Is this a fuel filter problem or something else.

    Any ideas out their.

good call on the temp guage

... Mine did that when the head was cracked, coolant loss and little red light - from memory a red $ sign - came on at the same time...!!

    also...

another one - if it happens again look for smoke, the outlet from the turbo has a multi layered hose that can collapse internaly, no evidence from the outside. This chokes off the air with power loss and unburnt fuel too I would think.
The oil in the harness will often make vehicle run on 4 cylinders too if it is the problem.

Oh yeah, this could be describing my "incident" perfectly. With me, it was because the temperature spiked, which triggers the ECU to cut the power. Push the foot down - nothing. When the temp dropped back again, power was back on.

Things to check for - are the thermo fans now running permanently (even with a/c off)? Mine was due to the engine overheating because of a stuffed head gasket and cracked head - classic TD5!!

If so, get prepared for BIG repair bills, and welcome to the club!

if the temp gauge is at the bottom and the red light is on, it has heated up and gone into "limp mode" will not put anypower though. you will have too switch the engine off to clear it from the ecu.

Did you have to shut the engine down and restart it?
I had a cable fault going to the TPS. Sometime it would loose power and "cough" but most times it put the engine to idle and lit the "check engine" light on the dash. Not handy when overtaking....
