fluid level TD5 Disco transfer case and removal of gbox filler plug+wheelnut covers!

Hi - is the transfer case fluid supposed to be level with the filler plug, or at least around the same height as the filler plug? On my recently purchased 99 TD5 Disco, I can't reach the level of the fluid even when placing a zip tie about 10cm down through the filler plug - should I be alarmed?

On a related issue, where's a good place to get the star-shaped tool for removing the gearbox filler plug (and rear seats)?

Finally, any tips for getting the bloody wheelnut covers off! The plastic tool isn't working, even after juggling them around a bit with the wheelbrace and a screwdriver...

    Thanks

The transfer case oil should be level with the filler plug.

Are you talking about the cap on the lock nut (concave end) for each wheel or all the covers on all nuts (convex end)?

    G'day mate,
I'd recommend dropping the oil asap, measure the amount that comes out to determine how alarmed you need to be, also examine the drain plug for metal fillings etc. When filling up, fill to the filler plug level. Should be around 2,3 litres.

The fluid should be level with the filler plug, I would recommend - drain, measure, panic, refil, keep your fingers crossed

The 'star' tools are torx and available in male and female from most car parts/accessory/tool outlets - get a set as they are used quite often on LR's

That about sums it up. Once it's full you will get an idea of any issues. Lot's of metal on the filler plug would be a worry. You will also probably find it leaks once you fill it.

gearbox filler is a T55 torx bit.
I THINK the seat removal bolts are also T55....

Be afraid about that transfer level, drain and check immediately.

I once (Years ago) drove 2500km with only 500ml of 80w90 in my LT230. Up hills it would get noisy, the wife actually mentioned it a few times, and me thinking I kew it all said 'What noise dear?'

when I found the oil level problem, she just gave me THAT look.....

Incidentally, I just filled the transfer and kept on the trip, it has now done a further 20,000km without a hiccup...Good old LT230's!!

make sure you are actually trying to romove the wheel nut cover that covers the locking nut only, as all the others will spin, but they wont come off.

    Smile sorry old thread

Hi Guys i have recently done a complete transfusion on the 2000 td5 130 and all went smoothly except for the transfer box. It was very low when checked prior to dropping the oil. Once i refilled it level with the filler hole, i set off on a trip. On the Hwy at high speed i could smell burning oil!!! got out to have a look and there was oil coming out of the breather and spilling over the exhaust. So i am not sure if this is why the oil level was low to start with or it had leaked out slowly over time. Has any one else had this experience?

    Thanks Jim
