Maybe you have a bad earth/short, does it have an immobiliser thats connected to the starter? Has anything else been playing up on the electrical side since the water?
hi all i need some help with a non starting v8 d1
a few weeks ago after submerging my disco in water the starter motor started sticking ( it needed to be hit with a stick to start) after which it "free'd" up and was o.k.
after doing harvey last weekend with another water crossing, the next day i turned the key and nothing - starter motor right?
well apparently not. put on a brand new starter this week started it perhaps 7/8 times to go somewhere and it's fired up no probs, washed the car this arvo and went to start it - nothing
any one got any ideas
sorry about the long post but wanted to give you full story
Maybe you have a bad earth/short, does it have an immobiliser thats connected to the starter? Has anything else been playing up on the electrical side since the water?
hi ging the ignition module was changed cos it wouldn't start after the first immersing and was traced to that, which when changed was good till now.
as i said it's a brand new starter on it now, been through all checks in haynes manual, battery voltage at starter, earth lead seems good, spade connection gets full battery voltage when key is turned but still nothing
after following haynes manual instructions it states that starter is faulty but surely cant be as it's new and is given the same probs as old one??
my rear lights (not the bumper ones) are also having problems - only working when i apply brakes and my rear electric window developed a problem which sorted itself out before i got to have a look
Hi Taff. The reason i asked about any other electrical problems is that a bad earth or short on one circuit usually affects others. Guess if current is reaching the starter motor or solenoid then there is a problem with one of them, but if the symptoms are exactly the same as before then is it coincidence that the new motor is faulty (but wasnt straight away), or is it being damaged due to an earthing fault on another circuit allowing current to be sent where it shouldnt? Im no electrical genius...or any other kind of genius come to think of it, and could be miles away here but might be worth looking at if there is no obvious answer.
Taff,
To be sure the Earth connection is good, you really need to take the lead off, clean the contact points, and put it back on!
I have bought new stuff before that didn't work when I put it on (eg Dissy rotor), so it is possible.
Hope it's sorted soon!
Cheers
Andre
Jason when it wont start can you run a wire from the battery positive to the starter solenoid. Use a 6mm wire to the spade terminal of the starter solenoid only and this should energize the solenoid and therefore the starter motor should turn. If it does then its not the starter motor.
Considering the water you had in your disco I would be getting a can of wd 40 or inox and remove the bottom of the dash and all the fuses and spray the wd 40 on every connection , same goes for all your relays remove them and spray them. Water and power connections that are live are not good as corrosion takes place and eats everything.
If you remove the battery and let everything dry before reconnecting power normally you wont have a problem, its only when its wet and power is on. Unfortunately this is not practical or wasnt in your case.
I would also do the same under your bonnet with all connections and relays everything you could possibly see, and dont be shy on spraying.
I would also be taking off the back door inside cover and doing that as well, I saw the amount of water you had in there! while you are at it take off all the door trims and spray inside them as well on the elect window connections and central locking contacts.
Do it now rather than later as the spraying should prevent any further corrosion/electrical problems.
I am doing the same to mine tomorrow as I also got a bit wet last sunday inside on the floor, although not like yours.

thanks brad will sort it today and let you know how i go
right, i've done as both brad and andre have suggested i've cleaned the earth strap that's connected to starter and it's now good. i ran a 6mm wire from battery + to solenoid spade and the motor threw so obviously not starter.
the wire that connects to the spade is getting 12 volts when key is turned but when connected to the spade on the solenoid and key is turned then voltage is getting lost.
i've traced the wire all the way back to the starter relay and tested that with a multimeter and thats o.k, next on the diagram is the alarm ecu - anybody now the location of this? and if anybody has any other ideas please chip in.
all sorted, followed wiring all around the starter system cleaning and crc'ing all connections - changed all connectors that looked shabby, reconected everything and she fired right up.
