The earlier series 2 lever with the bend would solve your problem. I retrofitted one to Elsa because the first stick was bent and i much prefer the feel and placement of the earlier stick.
Is there a difference between the length and profile of the main gearbox shift levers (gear sticks) on Series 3 and Series 2? My series 3 gear lever hits the dash when selecting reverse. I'm thinking that it may be a mix 'n match job!

check to see wether its a repaired broken stick. mine broke - welded it back together, same problem as you after. they do bend easy, so just bend it back?
The 6-cylinder gearshift differs from the 4 as well, in both 2a and 3.

Series 1/2/2a is different from the Series 3, but should interchange without problems. The six and the four are different and will NOT interchange without ptoblems. I suspect you either have the wrong lever, or as suggested, the lever has been incorrectly repaired or bent. Breakage of the lever at the top of the ball is quite common, and most of the ones you see will be repaired by welding. Breakage is usually due to excessive friction on the ball - graphite is the thing to use.

Thanks Guys. It's good to hear that I'm not alone on this one. I think that I will try the Oxy on it, well away from the ball. I have had a welded one break off on me; it gives you a shock!

At the base of the Series 2/2a lever there is a grove that takes a rubber "O" ring that takes-up the freeplay between lever and selectors, on the Series 3's the end of the lever is quite small, and it has a plastic type of ball cup that fits over the end, if that wears and drops off you will have a lot of play in the gear lever (slop) that will tend to make the lever hit the lower dash, replacing the end ball cures it.

Uncle Ho is the winner! That's what it was; the bush. I bought a whole new stick, complete with nylon bush for $36 from Brit Parts here in Perth. It has also solved the mysterious buzz/rattle that I had from the gearbox at some revs.
