body noise on bumps
Please tell me this is a simple and common problem.
I have got a clunk/loud click that sounds like it is coming from the drivers door or "A" pillar on rough,, or even just undulating roads. It seems to be more predictable when the right rear wheel go's over a bump ??? or if I swerve the vehicle sharply from left to right and back...( I only do this to try and nut out this noise TIC).
It sounds like something knocking or perhaps a bit like a panel joint clunking on body flex.
I am thinking it is actually the pillar as I can feel it clearly if i hold the pillar and not if I hold the door or roof etc. My fear is that the roof or pillar has cracked/failed.
So I am hoping people are going to reply with how common this is and I just have to do some simple thing to fix it(a loose window channel etc would be nice TIC).
So before I go ripping out the roof lining etc,,,, I'll ask the question
No need to remove stuff...
If the roof has cracked at the pillar its visible from outside right under the gutter...
Check shocks are tight, use a spanner!
Check bushes are tight on the bolts... Again Spanners!
Check body mounts...
Its a long list.....
Be methodical....
Shocks/bushes will transmit up the b pillar

Can you feel the 'clonk' through the steering?
If so, check out the panhard rod & steering damper bushes too.

No I feel in the pillar and door faguely on top of the trim,, but if I get my fingers on the metal body of the pillar i can feel it quite sharply

Try the radius arm bolts. They need to be very tight, and if they are not, they can produce a clunk. Easy one to eliminate; only 2 mins under the car with a couple of big spanners, and a bit of straining to get them VERY tight.
I routinely check mine after rocky terrain, as they have a tendancy to work themselves loose after a few days in the mountains...

You didn't say what kind of rover or how old it is!
You might also check the bushes at the chassis end of the radius arms.
When I have removed body mounts it is not uncommon to encounter rust under the rubber and the steel bush inside.

If I was a betting man, I'd bung a wedge of cash on the drivers footwell body mount loose or broken through the floor. I take it you have a D1?
This is not uncommon, especially if the vehicle has been on rough roads and especially if a roofrack has been used....
As I said, IF I was a betting man....

SubscriberI'll place a few $ on that too! They can make all sorts of noises from clunks to squeaks when cracks form.
The other possiblility is the links between the sway bar(s) and axle housing. The ball joint on them will clunk if worn.

Sorry the car is a Sept 01 TD5 Disco.
I have pulled the roof lining and pillar trims out. I found that both "A" pillars have cracked their inner panels completely thru at the top, the passengers B pillar has cracked inside and out, and the drivers B pillar has cracked outside only.
I also have found that both transfer box mounts on the chassis side have cracked. and the rear inner wheel arches have been cracked since the first year.
Get to practice some more welding soon I guess.
