    Freelander - oil changes

For some odd reason when Landrover designed the Freelander they decided that the oil in the rear diff, manual gearbox and IRD (transfer case) would never need replacing and at services the levels should be just checked. As such there is no requirement to change these fluids. As such there is no drain plug for the diff and the gear box and IRD filler and drain plugs are hard to get at.

I don't quite agree with this as I know that meshing gear teeth do cut the long chain polymers in oil that provide the lubrication. Even discounting pollutants, the oil looses its lubricating properties with use.

Can someone look up their disco or defender books and tell me the recommended oil change intervals for the diff, manual gearbox (R380) and transfer case.

    Thanks

I have done mine every 50,000kms, i dont mind if it comes out like new, but what matters to me is that what goes IN looks like new. I just like being content in knowing the oil is not to blame for a blown diff :P And the rear diff and IRD are known for damage if not looked after.

    Cheers!

50k km or sooner, i monitor for contamination on a regular basis (10,k service and after fording if the top of the axle housing got wet)and the oil is ment to be changed in the freelander, its ment to be changed by a mechanic at a dealer using fangdangled tool oil sucker that lets me charge a fortune to change oils.

I am working up a couple of vac sucker setups similar to the one we have at work but larger. Im basing it off of a cheap compressed air driven brake bleeder and old gas bottles and once finished should only cost about $80 to build from scratch if you happen to have an out of date gas bottle.

So in the absence of a service interval in the book, 50,000km would seem to be the go.

I can put it off for another 12,000k so a job for another day.

    Thanks

What sort of oil do you use for IRD ( I think the same oil for V6, 1.8 and Diesel)?

    On the manual says
    Intermediate Reduction Drive
    Texaco S5 75W90; Specification: API GL5

    Any equivalent to this?

In the IRD I use Valvoline DuraGear Synthetic SAE 75W-90 API GL5 and for the gearbox I am using Castrol Syntrans 75W/85.
