Description of Nulon Red (OAT)
Nulon Red Long Life Coolant Concentrate provides the ultimate anti-boil, anti-freeze and corrosion protection for all late model vehicles, including petrol, diesel and heavy duty diesel applications. Red Long Life Coolant incorporates the most up to date Organic Acid Technology (OAT) carboxylate corrosion inhibitors. Red Long Life Coolant is nitrite and amine free to meet US requirements, phosphate free to meet European requirements and silicate free to meet Japanese requirements. Nulon RLL's carboxylate inhibitor package is more stable and stays in solution better than traditional coolants. This provides an extended shelf life of 5 years. Nulon RLL will not form solids inside cooling systems, or become abrasive to water pump seals. All of this means that RLL provides maximum corrosion and anti-freeze, anti-boil protection for up to 5 years or 250,000 km, (whichever comes first).
Nulon Red Long Life Coolant is the preferred coolant to use in cooling systems that are fitted with aluminium radiators. It is a genuine 100% OAT based, long life coolant. RLL is dyed its distinct red/orange colour to instantly distinguish its unique chemistry from traditional green coolants. It should not be mixed with other coolants. As it is a concentrated coolant, it is to be used at 33% to 50% by volume in soft or demineralised water. Nulon RLL provides maximum protection against cavitation erosion of wet cylinder liners in diesel engines. Nulon Red Long Life Coolant is not recommended for use in cooling systems that have a copper/brass radiator (in such vehicles, use Nulon LL, which is green). If changing from any other coolant to Red Long Life Coolant , always thoroughly flush the system first as cross contamination will reduce the life of Red Long Life Coolant .
Benefits:
•
5 years or 250,000 km service life (whichever comes first) when used as directed
Guaranteed to suit every vehicle where red/orange OAT based coolant has been specified
Provides optimum, long term protection against corrosion of all cooling system metals
Compatible with hoses and rubber fittings
Expands operating temperature range of cooling systems (see details below)
Eliminates the need for supplemental coolant additives (SCA) in diesel engines
Reduces the incidence of nucleate or hot spot boiling
Not aggressive to water pump seals as is often the case with silicate based coolants
Performance of OAT inhibitors does not diminish with time
• Particularly effective in controlling cavitation erosion wet cylinder liners in diesel engines
Description of Nulon Green
Nulon Long Life Concentrated Coolant offers long-term cooling system protection for all motor vehicles. Nulon Long Life Coolant is based on Hybrid Additive Technology (HAT), which is a blend of organic and inorganic additives. The advantage of this product over conventional ethylene glycol type coolants is that the corrosion-inhibiting package has minimal depletion over an extended period of time. This means that maximum corrosion and anti-freeze/anti-boil protection are maintained until the fluid is replaced at the recommended 250,000 kilometres or four years (whichever comes first).
Nulon LL Concentrated Coolant is to be used at 33% to 50% by volume in soft or demineralised water. Nulon Long Life Coolant protects for four years or 250,000km and is safe to use in all Commodores and Ford Falcons (including all V series Commodores and AU to BF Falcons).
Nulon Long Life Coolant is a low silicate formulation containing no nitrite, phosphate or amine. These chemicals are often used in conventional coolants and have limitations in performance, protection afforded, and vehicles to which they are suited. Nulon Long Life Coolant is guaranteed suitable for use in all vehicles where the manufacturer specifies anti-boil/anti-freeze coolant.
Nulon Long Life Coolant meets the specified requirement (HN2217) of General Motors Holden for use in all Australian manufactured four-cylinder vehicles. HN2217 is the specification recommended by GMH for all warranty servicing of Australian built and imported (Opel) four cylinder vehicles.
Nulon Long Life Coolant's formulation is approved by Ford Australia (ESE-M97B44-A specification) for initial fill in all Australian manufactured 6 and 8 cylinder vehicles. This specification is recommended by Ford for all in-warranty and post-warranty servicing of Ford vehicles where a glycol based coolant is required.
Benefits:
•
4 years or 250,000 km service life (whichever comes first)
Guaranteed to suit every vehicle
Provides optimum protection against corrosion of all metals in vehicle cooling systems
Performance of organic acid based inhibitors does not diminish with time

Sorry to break into a TD5 discussion.... But the same would go for the TDi alloy head engine?

OAT or Nulon type coolants would be OK for this engine? Although there was some mention of OAT coolants creating issues with capitation corrosion on engines with water pumps not designed for the stuff?

While I know this is about the TD5 related probs, i bought a bottle (4 ltre) of the Nulon long life concentrated, mono ethylene glycol, the other day,
on the side of the bottle the aplication sheet says 'Landrover' all models'
4years/ 250,000 plus a heap of data on complying with international standards and manufacturers requirements.
doesn't say anything about oat. But the specs are gobblydee gook to me.

I think its what I put in a couple of years ago,

I have recently changed my coolant. When purchasing (Repco), with reference to JohnE, I saw this same bottle of Nulon (Green) coolant, it did state 'All LandRover Models', I was searching the specs and could' nt find what I was looking for. I called the technical line within the store. No anwser was given for the 'All LandRover Models' printed but it was suggested that the red OAT coolant was the correct product.

Caltex OAT is fine in copper/brass radiators, doesn't attack solder, and it looks like my Tdi came from the factory with OAT (it was one of the last Tdi's off the line ) as it had OAT in it when I acquired it and has continued to use it ever since.

Extended Life Coolant

Description
Extended Life Coolant is premium performance, environmentally sensitive, ethylene glycol based coolant for use in automotive cooling systems. It is based on extended life Carboxylate Technology in place of conventional, sacrificial inhibitor systems and is nitrite, phosphate, silicate, borate and amine free. When added to suitable cooling system water Extended Life Coolant both increases the boiling point and lowers the freezing point of the mixture.

RECOMMENDED FOR

The cooling systems of heavy and light duty diesel engines in both on and off-road service and for all passenger car engines. It is suitable for use in cast iron or aluminium engines or those using alloy materials. For aluminium containing passenger car engines it provides aluminium corrosion protection equivalent to high performance silicate based engine coolants. In both dry and wet liner design heavy duty diesel engines, it provides full cavitation erosion inhibition without the need for separate supplemental coolant additives (SCA).

It should be used in the proportions recommended by the engine manufacturer, when specified.

For optimum year-round protection, a solution of 50% Caltex Extended Life Coolant in water is recommended. It should not be used at concentrations greater than 67% or less than 40%. Freezing and boiling protection provided by various concentrations are shown in the following table:

Extended Life Coolant
in water % volume Freezing Protection
down to Increase in
Boiling Point 60% -51°C 10°C 50% -36°C 8°C 40% -24°C 6°C

Use only soft or de-mineralised water for preparing the coolant. Tank water is also suitable.

Recommended maximum service intervals are the lesser of:

Heavy duty diesel on-road 600,000 km or 4 yearsHeavy duty diesel off- road8,000 hours or 4 yearsPassenger cars and light commercials 250,000 km or 5 years

Warning: Ethylene Glycol is a Schedule 5 poison and contains 10 ppm of Bitrex (Denatonium Benzoate). This liquid is poisonous if swallowed, and can be an irritant to the skin and eyes.

PRODUCT BENEFITS

Extended service life:
Provides exceptionally long service life through non depleting carboxylate technology.

Complete cooling system protection:
Unique Carboxylate Technology inhibitor system provides corrosion protection for all engine and cooling system metals, including aluminium, iron, steel, copper and solder alloys from rust, corrosion, scale build up, electrolysis and cavitation erosion. Selective corrosion protection (only where it is needed) allows the remaining surfaces to be free of inhibitor film for unrestricted heat transfer.

Lowers the freezing piont:
Prevents engine freeze-up which can cause cracked cylinder heads or cylinder blocks, burst radiators and hoses or impaired circulation resulting in serious overheating soon after start up.

Increases the boiling point:
Minimises engine boiling by increasing the boiling point of the coolant and providing extra protection during hot summer periods or when towing heavy trailers or caravans. It is especially useful in vehicles fitted with air conditioners.

Inert:
Does not affect natural or synthetic rubber and extends water pump seal life due to the absence of deposit forming compounds.

Silicate free formulation:
Eliminates risk of silicate gel formation.

Environmentally friendly formulation:
Amine, phosphate, borate, silicate, molybdate and nitrite free.

CHANGEOVER PROCEDURE

Check that the cooling system is clean in good condition. Carry out any repairs that are necessary.

Drain the cooling system including radiator, engine block, heater core, oil coolers and after cooler, remove drain plugs and hoses as necessary to achieve this.

Flush the system using manufacturers instructions, if none are available follow the procedure below.
· Close all drains, reconnect hoses, fill with clean soft water, run the engine to operating temperature with the heater on.
· Shut down, allow to cool, drain the system again. Repeat this until the cooling system is clean and free from contaminants, previous coolant and any rust or scale.

If a filter is present replace it with a new filter that does not contain Supplemental Coolant Additives.

Refill with a 50:50 mixture of Extended Life Coolant
in water

Check the concentration is correct using a test kit or refractometer. These kits can be purchased from your Caltex representative.
