    Identification of Gearbox Types for Discovery (et al)

    Chaps, this seems like a dumb question but I wonder if you can help me positively identify which gearbox and transfer case are fitted to my 1996 Series I 3.9Lt V8 5-sp manual Discovery please.

    I've searched the forum but can't find a previous thread with the info I'm looking for - but please feel free to embarrass me by pointing out that there is already one in existence. A Google search was helpful but not 100% conclusive - the Rimmers site in the UK was the most help.

    I believe that I have an R380 gearbox and an LT230T transfer box.

    Research on the gearbox tells me:
    * The R380 replaced the LT77 in 1994
    * My gearbox's S/N is 53A0437435J - the suffix indicates model based on D-H = LT77, I-K = R380
    * The S/N is stamped on a cast pad on the RHS below a hex key socket filler bung

    The overhaul manual (on the RAVE disk) for the R380 states:
    "This Overhaul Manual contains information
    applicable to the following models:
    New Range Rover
    Range Rover Classic 1995 Models on
    Discovery 1995 Models on
    Defender 1995 Models on
    Discovery 2"

    Research on the transfer box tells me:
    * the LT230 was fitted to all Discovery models up to 1998
    * My txfer case's S/N is 28D486970F - the 28D prefix seems consistent with an LT230

    The overhaul manual for Discovery model year 1995, preface page for the LT230T states:
    "This transfer box is fitted to the following models:
    Serial No. Prefixes: 20D, 22D, 32D, 43D, 47D,
    56D, 57D, 58D, 59D, and 60D - Defender
    Serial No. Prefixes: 28D, 34D, 41D, 42D -Discovery
    Serial No. Prefixes: 14D, 15D, 20D, 26D, 27D, 28D
    and 30D - Range Rover Classic"

    The overhaul prefaces the LT230Q with:
    "Serial No. Prefix 36D and 37D - Discovery
    Serial No. Prefix 38D and 40D - Defender"

    Thanks for your help - and I wouldn't be upset to see this thread continue with info to assist with identifying other gearbox / transfer box models, btw.

    Graham,
    That year & vintage your vehicle was fitted with an R380 5 spd manual g/box & the LT230 transfer box.

    That gearbox & transfer case stayed with the discovery until the end of the Discovery series 1 (98my) & continued til the end of the Discovery series 2 (04my)
    There were slight differences in the boxes but the overall design was the same with most components also.

    Graham,

    With regard to the gearbox, if reverse is below 5th, then you have an R380, if it's up and left (i.e. next to 1st you have the LT77).

    Thanks Guys,
    Yes reverse is below 5th. I'm happy now - R380 and LT230 it is. Thanks for confirming.

    The Ashcroft site is an excellent reference for distinguishing between the LT77, R380 and LT85 boxes (and one that Google didn't come back with in the first 3 or 4 pages).

    Cheers!

    The current latest R380 gearbox is suffix L. Yours is suffix J and one to be avoided if possible if buying again.

    Suffix K & L are good, if a new one is out of anyones budget for buying new.
