EGR disconnect

Hi Guys.
Thanks to BradM I may have solved the performance issue on my TD5.
He sent me a PM advising that the EGR may be stuck open.
Ive removed it and cleaned it,it seemed to be open with the engine off.There was a definate release of vacumm and a clunk when the hose was removed.
There was carbon in the seat so it wasnt sealing when closed.The shaft was totally gunked up as Brad predicted.
Ive re-fitted but blocked the vacumm hose to disable the EGR.
It definately feels more spritely than before!!!!
Apart from pollution laws is there any need to have the EGR functioning????
Im guessing the computer dont know if its open or shut.

Required reading for LR owners in the UK. Sort of like AULRO for me now.

The blanking plates come up from time to time on ebay UK, but as my 300 didn't have an EGR at all, I'm guessing the plate must a standard LR part over here. Makes the perfect spot to drill for your EGT sensor too.

I can see a plate being no issue, but is there any one in Aus that makes a replacement pipe for the TD5.
Andy some pics how you did yours would be good.

Why to pay for it?

I've made the blanking plate from 1 mm steel, drilled 2 holes, put in place and that's it. It didn't take long time, including the blanking vacuum pipes on other side of engine
