    Defender Gearbox Woes

My '02 Defender, after 226,000 kms has just developed a noisy 5th gear. It doesn't sound like a bearing, the best analogy would be the sort of noise we used to get by pegging a piece of cardboard against our bicycle spokes. Does anyone have any experience of this fault, and if so where would be the best place to get it fixed in Melbourne (preferably Northside)?

    Cheers

I know that noise very well.. heard it once too often..

In fact its being fixed again right now. Oil pump failure is the cause this time.

Running hot does seem to shorten the life of them. I'm having a transmission cooler added this time.

Mine is in being fixed at the moment. Lovely noise isn't it?

Kevin from Rovertech tells me that changing the 5th gear needle roller bearing back to the older bush design will stop it happening again.

I hate to be stupid about it but wasnt shifting from bush to a needle roller bearing supposed to be the cure in the first place?

IMHO having both sides that the needle roller sits in toleranced to suit a known size needle roller and putting in another needle roller would be the better, if not more costly, solution.
