Rangie 5spd swap for 4spd 'box

I have an 85 Rangie with standard 5 spd box in it, and im looking at changing it to a 4sp LT95 in the future. The reasson for this... reliability. My Rangie is not a tourer, it will be used for bush, and I prefer a tougher box rather than the 5th gear. Question is, what price could I be looking at and are there any Tasmanians who have one for sale (can do exchange with cash adjustment). Reading previous threads here, they have been bought for only a few hundred dollars. Mine currently suffers from a sick, but working, reverse gear and a slightly worn 2nd (syncros).

Any advice on this mod (both pros and cons) would be helpful.

    Cheers,

    Carlos

much cheaper to buy a used box and sometimes cheaper to buy an old rangie.
A used 4sp should cost you no more than a few hundred unless it's had lots of work.
IMO if your gearbox is on the way out go for it.
A recon would cost you big $ about 3-4k I think but I will be corrected.

BTW if you reverse is dodgy but the others OK ish remove your gearstick and check the end of the stick under the ball it should be straight. Mine was bent and wouldn't go in gear.

    cons:
    1. would be an older box and might be more worn?
    2. it's an absolute pig of a job, (long n boring)

pros: reportedly a very tough box

Thanks. I have read that the lt95 is a tough box, hence why i would consider changing to one. And yes, it would only be a second hand jobbie, not a recon one.

If they've been setup correctly, then they're supposed to be brilliant but if not...... then $$$. Just had the transfercase of mine partially rebuilt and cost $2,800..... Replacements parts are getting difficult to get (hence the $$$), so I've been told, so make sure you can test the box before you buy.

I have a contact here who can sell me a LT95 box with warranty (box not rebuilt) for $600... is that a fair price?

I would expect to pay between 300-500 for a LT95, (if you can get one) so I suppose if you have warranty as well it would be worth an extra $100.

They have 2 by the sounds of it. Reverse on my current 5 spd is the issue, 2nd gear synchros are a little worn, but apart from that is OK. Reverse goes in OK, its just makes a clunking noise when reversing (especially when off the throttle, makes a clunk, clunk clunk noise) and sounds terrible. I have to ride the clutch to make reverse go fairly smoothly.

    How long can you wait?

I will be pulling the 4 speed out of my Rangie at the end of the year. If you wanted it you can have it for $400
