    Deep 6 a Charcoal Canister

Existing charcoal canister is the victim of a wee engine bay fire in my D1 V8

Does any one know of any reason why this canister can't be removed and vapour lines to the tank and plenum chamber inlet tract terminated/sealed off (other than being a naughty boy with evaporative emission control)

theres the remote and I stress remote possability of overpressureising the fueltank on a hot day but thats about it.

the charchoal canister is the safety vent on some systems cant rememebr if it is in a landy tho.

    A fire!

I set my radiator on fire yesterday. Out of the car fortunately.

Carby cleaner and a gas blow torch........be positive the carby cleaner has evapourated before igniting the torch

    What did you do?

The only tank vent is through the charcoal cannister. It is required to allow the fuel system to "breath". Why not just get another one and remain legal?

I had my hands full at the time

The main problem was that when I blew it out it would reignite. Just like a joke birthday candle. Lucky it doesn't have plastic tanks!

The charcoal tank is (usually) the main breather for the fuel tank, and the charcoal absorbs the fuel vapours. Probably why it burnt so well. Intermittently, the ECU tells the engine to take some idle air from it, slowly draining the fuel vapours out and into the engine. Its probably best just t ofix it back to stock. a different breather may also catch fire, perhaps easier.

photo of my wee BBQ.....you asked for it...here it is......(white stuff is extinguisher....brake fluid reservoir tried desperately to burn and die before the friggin high octane fueled canister .......reservior won by a nose)

Sorry but I don't believe the Coal Miners Daughter Canister (CMDC) is the sole tank vent for a pre Cat D1.... well in practise...if not designed....the A end around filler cap/lines is not a great place to have a smoke on a hot day if you are disbeliever...

I am a ECU nervous nelly ....but even I am convinced the purge valve that quits vapour to the plenum inlet tract and sits within the CMDC ...well the ECU only stops that purge happening (does not activate purge) when engine is cold or idling....other times ECU does not give a bugger and purge valve remains open. I would love to know otherwise????

Anyone indicating I should bite the bullet and reinstal the CMDC...well at 10% the retail value of my 13 year old D1 ..I think not....hence my pityfull info request.

    Ouch!

It looks like you have more to worry about than just replacing the charcoal canister
