there are a few threads about it but mainly its because by the time the needle on the temperature gauge gets to red the engine is cooked. Apparently the positioning of the temp sender is not a good one or something like that.

obviously no coolant then = hot (and dead) engine

some here have experienced it.

My engine saver worked the other week when i had a small leak in my overflow tank. screamed its tits off.
