    I think I'm in trouble

    Hi all,

I have a question, it is not LR related, however it is an engine and I'm sure someone here can give me an idea of what is wrong with it.
My wife called me today, her car, a Chrysler Grand Voyager overheated and she had pulled up. When I got there, all the coolant was on the floor. At close inspection, no broken hoses. I topped it up with water just to get it home, only 5 kms away.

Got home, and nothing, after dinner, I took it for a 10 minute drive... nothing. Left it running for a further 10 minutes and I noticed the aircond was not working and the electric fans were not kicking in. Shortly after, the whole cooling system started making a noise and the overflow tank was boiling. The temp gauge did not move and the fans did not kick in..... Not a mechanic, but somehow this reminds me of my first Gemini, and it was a head gasket. Am I right?? No apparent water in the engine either.

If it is, I'm scared to think about the repair bill

If it is a head gasket run some chem weld through it and flog it.

May be a head gasket, simply leave the radiator cap of and run it till operating temp it'll bubble angrily

To me it sounds as if, you've blown a fuse or fusible link and the engin eis running excessive temp, does it missfire?? What's the temp of the radiator hoses, by feeling with your hand?? do they burn your mittens

it could be that the fans are just not working. was the ac working, but just not that cold. if so this may just relate to the fans. your in qld so i assume it is warm up there. if the fans dont work the engine may overheat in warmer weather and the AC gas may build up to much pressure too with no cooling of the condensor

    easy.

the thermo fans not kicking in is the clue...

for some reason they didnt start and it over heated forcing all the coolant out via the overflow system. when your wife stopped its come out there and stayed on the deck.

    Most frequent causes are

blown fuse or fusable link to the controlling relay
    dud relay or other connection.
    Fan failure

The problem now is how bad did you cook it? if its alloy engined (more than likely) then by now the head gasket is probabley gone.

you need a sparky to fault find the system. You may also have not bled the system properly when you filled it up and an air pocket has stopped the sensor from reacting correctly.

As for the aircon not working often the aircon compressor clutch runs off the same power feed as the fans.

    Well...
Definitely the air cond works up to a certain level, then it shuts down, the fans don't work, no blown fusses.
The temp gauge is not moving past 1/2 and with the radiator cap removed, after a good 10 minutes, water start to overflow until it looked like boiling water and when I turned the engine off... a beautiful eruption like moment... water went up in the air for a few seconds then it all stopped.
This thing is so dammd electronic, that I would not even know where to start to see why the fans don't work.
Because it ís a front wheel drive, the two electric fans do all the cooling, so for sure that is a problem because throughout the whole thing, they did not work at all. My only concern is a blown head gasket. $$$$$
