I use shell Rimula X. I buy it at supercrap on their 20% off days. Costs about $40 for 10 litres.
Coopers or Ryco filters. Am use a Z9 at the moment, but clearance doesn't seem an issue on a 200 Tdi.

When I take my July trip it usually ends up being 9000k so I do the oil just before I leave and as soon as I get back. Otherwise i do it sometime after 5000k and before 10000k.

It does run beautifully after an oil change so I can understand the temptation to do it at 5000 but I'm just too tight and never get round to it.

its not the oil usage you need to watch as a general rule, it is what the oil pressure is and how long it takes to get there and how long it stays there, as a general rule, not to mention particulate size getting thru the filter.

Yeah particulates in the oil and the breakdown of the additives is the main reason for changing oil.

Most filters in normal useage (not constantly in dusty enviroment) will last until and sometimes beyond 20000kms if you had them tested as until they go onto bypass they are still effective and will filter more smaller particals as they block up BUT you dont know when they go onto bypass so this is why we change them well within a certain interval.

I might see if my Peak rep will let me post some tech info on oils in general and I could probably get some info from baldwins aswell, just got to get permission to post it.
