    Cool Fuel Tank Query

Hello all I have just put a good second hand fuel tank in my 76 2 dr Rangie? I purchased a reconditioned sender from local Jag/Rangie spares outlet and fitted this at the same time?
    My query is this.
When I added 10 litres of fuel the low fuel warning light went out? Good so far I believe?
Added a further 40 Litres of fuel but now the fuel guage only reeds a quarter of a tank?
I have had the guage in the dash tested and it is operating fine?
Is it possible that the recoed sender may be DOA??
    Thankyou in advance
    Tim Austin

I don't have my workshop manual for that model with me at work but....

I suspect the instruments are powered via a voltage stabiliser (as they were on my Smiths intrumented Hillman Hunter).

The stabiliser gives an approximate 10 volts out (you can't check it with a meter as it's a pulsing voltage but the "average" voltage is about 10 volts. If the average voltage is low, the fuel guage (and probably the temp guage if it is electrical) will read low.

I don't know any easy way to test the stabiliser. It is adjustable - it has a screw adjuster but I wouldn't play with it if I didn't know what I was doing (and I don't!)

I have assumed the sender is the right one for the tank.

    Smile Thankyou

Thankyou I shall remove the voltage stabiliser over the weekend and order a new one just to be sure.
I do not mind replacing parts on my rover as the old ones if re-usable can be kept as spares.
Will let the forum know how It goes.
    Regards
    Tim

It could be that the float needs adjusting, my rangie would read between one third and half a tank but was actually empty. When I had the tank reconditioned I just bent/modified the wire between the sender and the float so that it was roughly accurate, at least now the low level light comes on rather than just cough die - out of fuel no warning.

See if you can borrow one.

Actually, Hobie's suggestion is worth following up first.

To expand Hobie's suggestion - remove the sender from the tank - connect it, including the earth, and move the float through its full travel, checking what the gauge does, but remembering that it takes a while to move. This will check that gauge, sender and stabiliser are OK, but won't necessarily tell you which one is faulty if it does not check out. Also, is there a possibility of wrong connections on the sender or possibly a faulty earth? Although I can't see how that could be the case if the low fuel light does work normally, but I don't have a circuit diagram.
