    Cool $12700- oilchange....Chev 6.5 conversion

Hmmm, I need to get this off my chest and get some advice on how to tell the partner/soon to be wife(suggestions welcome)....that the "service" on my 01 extreme(picked up yesterday) just cost $12700- and as a result that we may have to budget a little on our honeymoon in 11wks time....I feel numb....
Went in for trc/abs light on and a service, needed
-new cv joints, seals(county h/duty used)
-new axles and drive members front and rear(maxidrive)
    -Gearbox overhaul
    -Front/rear brake pads
    -new heater box and fan
    -new tfr gear and bearings
    -H/Duty clutch
    -Low water sensor
    -bonnet cable
    -heat core
    -recon master and slave cylinders
    -fluids/seals/
    -front radius rod bushes
-remachining of conversion kit(for 6.5chev)which was apparently 120thou out as fitted and resulted in the gearbox damage.
-The friction plate on the clutch had been installed in reverse position when the chev motor went in, which apparently works, but not for long....hence new clutch, done properly this time
    -new tyres,goodyear mtr's 285/75/16
-I've left out the little bits....
-So the moral is....beware the Chev diesel conversion, the costs may not end when you drive away.
    My conversion cost about $20k.
I then spent about another $2k on a tfr box to drop the revs which were way too high...initially having been told "revs should be fine", by the Chev installers.
Of the bill I just got, about $5k of it relates to problems caused by the conversion.
So $27k for the 6.5chev, I love it but it's not worth that...
I guess I'll go back to the crowd who installed the Chev out of rightousness and get their reaction...but I'm betting they won't reach for the cheque book, denials commenced already when contacted by my mechanic....
I sometimes wonder if a love of Landy's is endowed upon us a some sort of test of character....

There is no 'best' way to break it to your betrothed.
I would suggest you see the priest/minister/celebrant and have the aforementioned predicament inserted as part of your vows.
That way, 'wife to be' will be at her happiest and will at least contain the rage 'till after the reception and having thought about it for a couple of hours.
If you are lucky, F-I-L may come to your rescue and help ease the pain.

    Ouch! My sympathies...

I did look briefly at the Chev conversion for mine...but too many people who know far more about Defenders warned me off....

In the end, I decided on a nice Rover V8, which will be rebuilt in 4.6 form for far less than a Chev motor, will almost bolt straight in, more power and all the torque needed, plus my gearbox and drive train will survive....

So far, I've yet to meet someone with a totally sorted Chev conversion who is happy with everything, and you can use a hell of a lot of petrol offroad (And gas on road) for the cost savings in the motor, and although the diesel will be worth more, it will have depreciated far more too.

Though none of the above will be making you feel better, so sorry for that, and again, you have my sympathies. Look at it this way though, if she still marries you after this, you know you'll be able to get away with murder!
