    This Td5 is a disaster!

After breaking down nearly 20 times in the last 15 months I am desperate! - breaking down means intermittent surging with subsequent loss of accelerator function which when you take off from the lights in peak hour traffic - is most alarming! This happens even though the 2004 Td5 manual which I bought new has been serviced 'by the book', has had the potentiometer replaced twice and the computer once plus the dealer put in a bypass wire outside the loom from the potentiometer to the 'computer'. It has been at the dealers for a total of nearly 8 weeks! I have had the car trucked home several times then trucked to the dealer. Fortunately the Disco has 'broken down' twice while being driven by their technicians so they know what happens. When I contacted Land Rover Australia they said 'See your dealer' - When I sought the advice of the R.A.A. technical/legal team they said 'See your dealer'. What now? I have suggested that L.R.A. and Solitaire contact L.R.U.K. for advice since they can't work it out here!
I am sending the car back to Solitaire tomorrow - I do not want to drive it anymore - it is unsafe!
    A most disappointed Michael
P.S. I have owned several RR's and Disco's since 1975 with very few problems.

When it surges can you see large plumes of smoke?

If you back off does it pick up a bit?

Its going to be a combination of faults... and none of them are TPS related

    1. your induction system is causing problems starting with the delamination of the first hose after the turbo..

    2. you will have some crook sensors that are still reading within acceptable limits for the ECU but are wrong for what is actually happening within the engine

    3. the EGR valve is sticking in the open position

    4. you have gummy turbo bearings

    5. your fuel pressure regulator is sticking open and dumping fuel straight back to the tank and not maintaining fuel pressure during hard accelleration

    6. fuel pump not producing spec pressure

    7. goop in the intercooler.

Checking them will give you some indicators. Those indicators will give you more answers.

I think there was something on one of the current affair shows that said something along the line that the dealer must replace the car if they cannot fix it, but I would suggest that you consult a solicitor about it, then get him to write a letter to the dealer. That will generally get them moving.

You can also ask to talk to the manager about it and if then no satisfaction go to LRA with the complaint.

Just a thought while writing, could it be a faulty earth somewhere? or the famous oil in the injecter harness

    Thanks Dave,
At no stage has THE problem occurred under hard acceleration - I don't need to do such things unless tackling certain Canning Stock Route dunes - like I did in May 2006 with no such symptoms. I will pass the suggestions on to the technicians,

Funny enough it was Toyota that was against the lemon law in Australia. They were going to close the assembly plant if it was brought in. Pat

it doesnt have to be under hard acceleration just any time that the EGR valve is open or when the engine is drawing more air than the turbo is pushing. (typically off idle at the lights)

If your engine braking and havent modded the EGR if it sticks open your engine is breathing exhaust gasses and it gets worse when you accelerate.

If you have a hose collapse once its sucked closed it will stay that way till you back off and sloooooowly build up again.

these are the things that tombraider has alluded to already.

If either of those are the primary culprit you should with very gentle accelerator application be able to prevent it from happening. if its not then one of the other 5 i mentioned will be gettingyou... These theorys also dont discout the oil in ECU harness hassle Zapped ECU from poor installation, Dodgy connector plugs from greasy fingered mechanics, or bad earths anywhere in the system....
